The far west end of 42nd Street needs some form of rail transit.

An electric powered trolley system should have been included when the West Side Highway was rebuilt -- that was a HUGE missed opportunity.

There has also been discussion of a light rail to go across 42nd St. from the East River to the Hudson River.

At 627 West 42nd Street, Mr. Kondylis has designed for J. D. Carlisle Development a very striking and handsome condominium tower that is notable for its indented notches. The slab tower has all glass facades at its corners and the north and south facades have four two-story-high protruding façade elements at the corners of the building that extend about two-thirds of the way across the facades in alternating fashion. The effect is very high-tech and very bold.

This is what I like about Kondylis:

"I’m for taller buildings, which are more environmentally sound, allow more density and more open space,” he declared. When asked to chose his favorite designs, he begged that like all fathers he loves his children all equally, but then added that Trump World Tower “is a true skyscraper in the best Miesian tradition; we kept it simple and I think it is very successful.”"

How does he juggle so many projects? At any given time, only about three projects “at most” are in the design phase, he said, adding that recently for the first time he has had to turn down commissions because of the workload and his desire to maintain the quality of the projects.

He reckons that Birnbaum’s record of about 400 buildings will never be broken. “Projects were much simpler and he could repeat his floorplans 20 times,” Mr. Kondylis said, adding that “today developers are much more knowledgeable and savvy about architecture and the atmosphere for good design has changed dramatically.”

And:

He is delighted, however, that the city’s developers are much more concerned about design and welcomes the presence of “big name” international architectural stars such as Santiago Calatrava, Sir Norman Foster, Renzo Piano and Jean Nouvel. His practice is beginning to reflect the new design dynamics.

That being said, the rendering for this 625 W. 42 looks promising.

To his defense, it seems like he has gotten better with each successive project, with this one being his best work so far IMO (TWT brings nothing new to the table, just another black box, albeit a sleek one).

However, it is unfortunate that NY's skyline has to permanently bear much of his earlier, "learning on the job" works, if you will.

The protrusions or whatever they are/were called are going to be balconies i think...they have railing going up on them. It's a nice break in the design, even with it still just being concrete, it still looks like a nice building. they are about halfway up right now, I am thinking the second set of balconies (second big indention) just went up. Edit....maybe they are even to the third set already. I'll look when I go home.

According to today's NY Post it sounds like the site under construction is not JD Carlisle but Moinain. Does any body know?

It is JD Carlisle. Moinian is on Tenth Ave.
