Manhattan Beach Brooklyn
On Weds. I took the bus alllllll the way from Bay Ridge to Manhattan Beach, over an hour ride. I went throughDyker Heights, with all the mansions neatly kept rowhouses. Traveled under the "el" on 86th Street through Bath Beach/Bensonhurst. Made my way on Ave X to beautiful Ocean Parkway, through the gritty Brighton Beach neighborhood under the "el" and finally to Manhattan Beach, a surprising neighborhood in NYC that resembles a quiet Connecticut seaside city. Rows and rows of houses, big and small, arranged on streets named after English villages, Kingsborough Community College, and of course, the beach!
Side Note- I'm a novice when it comes to phototaking so all of these pictures aren't the greatest. But it gives you a general idea. It was also very hazy and hot for April. I wish I took more, but enough talk, Enjoy this beautiful neighborhood........ Looking towards the Breezy Point Queens...... Getting the beach ready for summertime........ Brooklyn parrot, these things wreak havoc with power lines........ And some houses.......... Looking towards Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn......... NYC public school buildings are each unique and beautiful....... I did this on dial-up modem so it took me an hour to host these pictures , some day I will do my neighborhood of Bay Ridge and other neighborhoods.

You took the B1, no? I take it twice a weekday. Oriental Boulevard is a pretty thing to ride. That house 4th from bottom is on Amherst, right? I think I walked past it a few days ago. Did you catch any of the construction on Oriental Blvd? Or the cool beige modernist house with the tree inside?

I was at the beach with my wife and friends that day! If you had moved your camera shot a little to the left you would have got us in the beach pic! Damn!

Manhattan Beach School. PTA meetings.
The beach still looks like a resort beach. The site was once the Oriental Hotel.  Austin Corbin made a fortune in railroad finance. In 1873, his infant son became ill, and a doctor advised leaving Iowa for a place with sea breezes. From a hotel on Coney Island, he walked to a place called Sedge Bank, which was considered worthless. Its my favorite place in the world. We are there every weekend from May through September having beach parties. Anybody who wants to join us from here is welcome.

Bonus- 76th street step street! You guys take care of Manhattan and I'll take care of my boro.

Hope that helps, it's a very broad question, if you want to come by yourself it's cheaper, but if you have a family you need a larger apartment or house and it gets more expensive.

Well you don't have to settle for Staten Island, its like a giant suburb and the only way to NYC is by ferry (take a bus or if you're near staten island railroad TO the ferry) or a long, very long bus ride. Try Brooklyn and Queens, try neighborhoods like Jackson Heights and Astoria in Queens and Williamsburg, Prospect Heights, and Sunset Park in Brooklyn. A little gritty, but totally safe, and new hip neighborhoods. I think you can get a room by yourself for between $1,000-$1,500 a month, probably small, probably in a walk-up or brownstone building. Very convenient to Manhattan!
Your chances for a job in Brooklyn or Queens are much better too, Staten Island is mainly residential. I don't know how much you would make, but you're right, definitely find a job before an apartment. Glad I could help. And by the way- Make sure you make the right decision to come to America lol. Just think twice before you make a big leap, it is a big change for sure. But the city will welcome you in open arms!
