Description

What to expect: Located across from historic Washington Square, this nine-floor, Art Deco-accented hotel is at the center of downtown shopping, nightlife, and restaurants. A recreation of the original façade decorates the exterior; mosaic artworks by co-owner Rita Paul line the interior walls. A skylight illuminates the central stairwell. Guests are mostly vacationers, although some business travelers also stay at the hotel.

Amenity highlights: North Square Restaurant and Lounge offers three New American meals daily, as well as a jazz brunch on Sundays. The quieter lobby bar serves high tea, light snacks, and dinner. Use of the fitness center is complimentary, and a massage facility is also on the premises. Complimentary wireless Internet access is available in the lobby and lobby bar. The front-desk staff members are multilingual.

Insider tip: Back in Greenwich Village’s bohemian days, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and other artists stayed at the Washington Square—then a residential hotel. Guests can visit the coffeehouses on MacDougal Street, such as Cafe Borgia and Caffe Reggio, to drink and dine where Beat poets, musicians, and other artists once socialized.
