Phillips Exeter Academy Library

Does anyone reading these boards have access to (or know of someone who has access to) the library at Phillips Exeter Academy, in Exeter, NH?

I am looking to get some detailed photographs of the interior of this building, preferably photos of spaces other than the main atrium, which is rather well documented and available in a number of resources. I am working on a new library in New York and am interested in details of doorways, stairs, elevators and controls, study carols, lighting, and original furniture.

Well I would recommend you reading Between Silence and Light: Spirit in the Architecture of Louis I. Kahn writing by John Lobell.

I actually have copies of the floor plans if you need them just ask and I can e-mail you them.

Thanks for the recommendation, and I would like to take you up on your offer to e-mail the floor plans to me. Though I have seen most of the Kahn resources available, I don't recall whether or not I've looked at the one you mention in particular.

I've been up to Exeter before and took some photographs of the exterior, though the interior is really what this building is about. Of course Kahn's large gestures are often inspirational, but I'm interested in how he approached and detailed the mundane items such as placement of light switches, types of door hardware, elevator controls, etc...things that someone with rather free access to the building could properly document. As far as I know, these kinds of things are not documented in any Kahn literature.

I am currently taking a Buildings and codes class at my University. Does anyone know where I could find information on plumbing, electrical and so on of the exeter library. Its a semester long research portfolio and It has to be detailed. Please help!

The Exeter Building Dept. should have it on file, don't know if it's public record though.

The building superintendant would have plans and schematics as well.

I live in Newmarket which is the town just north of Exeter, I would be willing to get pictures for you. Though I am not entirely sure that I could get access into the building. Is it open to the public? Granted I might be able to slip in as a student but...
