CLEARVIEW EXPRESSWAY: New York's Biggest SPEED TRAP!

Night and day. Rain or shine. New York's Finest is out there on the Clearview Expressway, pulling people over for doing 60 MPH on an 80 MPH superhighway posted at a mind-numbing 50 MPH. In short, it's highway robbery. This has to be the biggest speed trap in New York City, if not New York State. An unmarked car behind every bush, and on every on-ramp. It's nuts! A total waste of limited police resources.

By posting this new topic, I encourage drivers to weigh in on this blight on the otherwise fine reputation enjoyed by the NYPD, and to vent frustration on having to shell out big bucks for simply driving at safe and reasonable speeds. I would also encourage drivers to BOYCOTT THE CLEARVIEW, and to use any available alternate routes, until this enormous revenue-generating machine is dismantled.

A few points:

1. I have found from years of driving experience (and knowing a few cops and 1 state trooper) that you can drive up to 10 mph over the limit on a highway with impunity.

2. The Clearview Expressway is 4.75 miles long. How much time are you going to save?

3. Everyone knows it's a speed trap. Actually, trap is not an accurate term. A true speed trap is not the presence of the police, but a sudden change in the speed limit. The Henry Hudson Parkway near Fort Tryon is an example. There are no surprises on the Clearview.

3. The Clearview is monitored because much of the time it has little traffic, and the temptation to (really) speed is great. A similar stretch in Brooklyn is the Belt Parkway west after the Verrazano Bridge. 90% of the traffic exits at the bridge or Bay Ridge exit, and you have an empty two mile stretch of road that's very inviting. All the regulars know to keep it under 60 until the last bend.

You know, I don't think I've EVER driven on the Clearview Expressway. Does it lead anywhere I want to go?

The Clearview runs south from the Throggs Neck Bridge, and just ends at Hillside Ave.

It passes through one of my favorite Queens neighborhoods - Bayside.

I Used to Drive on The CLEARVIEW Every Weekend When I Used to Drive My Wife to Work There in Flushing off of Union Turnpike and I'd See The Cops Out There Pulling People Over in Their Unmarked Cars,LOL!!.The Key to Not Being Pulled Over is that You Drive Responsibily and DON'T Give Them a Reason to PULL YOU OVER!!

Any assistance for somebody who was pulled over on the Clearview? Do you know anyone who has beaten a speeding ticket on that highway?

Forget about "beating" any ticket issued in NYC. The so-called traffic court is a star chamber with the outcome predetermined. They just want your money. This may be a "free country," but it's a costly one, from time to time.

As for avoiding tickets by simply being a good boy and obeying all the rules, I will be the one laughing out loud when Mr. Innocent driver gets pulled over on the Clearview because the NYPD's radar or laser just happened to interpret his 50 mph as 75. Oh but hey -- that never happens! What am I thinking?! If the NYPD says I was doing 80 MPH, they must be right. Cops never make mistakes, radar and laser never issues bad readouts, and (of course) the government never lies to us.
