Hey guys
I was wondering if anybody here has ever stayed at the Washington Jefferson Hotel? My girlfriend and I were looking to stay there when we come down to New York in late July. We got a really good rate, a little under $500 US for 3 nights. However we have been told that it is in a pretty bad/ rough area. Its located at 318 West 51st Street and the website is
http://www.wjhotel.com/ (http://www.wjhotel.com/). Do you guys think I should avoid this hotel?
Thanks
Dave

I've heard of that hotel but don't know anything about it. But very few, if any, parts of Midtown Manhattan are "pretty bad/rough" areas, and 318 West 51st Street is definitely not one of them. Tacky and touristy, yes; unsafe, no.

In fact that block of 51st (between 8th aVe / 9th Ave) is a nice, quiet, tree-lined block. Close to terrific restaurants on 9th Ave -- and accessible to everything else.

hi guys, thanks for your help. My aunt lived in New York most of her life, and now mu uncle travels back and forth between New York and Toronto for business. They told me that I shouldn't be travelling west of 6th; apparently it used to be a pretty shitty neighbourhood. They said that you have to cut through some unpleasant areas once you pass 6th and they wouldn't want us doing that at night. What do you think? Both my aunt and uncle admit to not knowing what the area is like any more, but they're worried that it may still be kinda rough/run-down. Let me know what you think. Thanks!!!

Your aunt and uncle clearly don't know anything. I wouldn't take anything they say seriously.
You do plan on seeing Times Square, right? That's west of 6th Avenue.

I heard the Hello Kitty store west of 6th is full up with ruffians.
