I want to know why a group of healthy, adult Hasidim were the first people rescued. All night long, it was reported that children would be the first people evacuated.

Maybe it wasn't the rescuers who decided that. Being healthy lets you climb right in.

There were kids in the group, though: seven children and five adults.

Honestly, you'd think an adult would be too ashamed to cut in that line.

hello i'm new to this forum. i was there as a first responder. your answer lies with his lordship ray kelly. he wanted the photo op. he also would not let fd help. fd had a ladder truck on the Manhattan side and the cop's said no way. someone should look in to the city's cims document.

The Citywide Incident Management System, a protocol that governs how various city agencies are to interact during a major emergency, was supposed to help eliminate tensions between the police and fire departments and to more clearly specify who is in charge in crisis situations. But since the protocol does not discuss the Roosevelt Island tram, it appeared yesterday that both the NYPD and the FDNY were claiming to be the department most capable of handling such aerial rescues.
At least one stranded tram passenger said she witnessed police officers being upset that firefighters were involved in the rescue. "There were comments made saying 'It's always the Fire Department that gets the glory,'" said Laurence Marie, 56, of Roosevelt Island. "There was an implication the Fire Department would not know what to do." Authorities, including police and fire officials, said the rescue effort went smoothly, and they dismissed any notion that there was a battle of the badges, a term often used to the tensions that occasionally flare up at scenes involving cops and firefighters. Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, the NYPD's chief spokesman, said the tram rescue was similar in nature to a bridge rescue involving someone threatening to jump. The NYPD, Browne said, are experts in such incidents. "The police department was in the lead, took the lead," Browne said. "The police department took charge." The FDNY, meanwhile, had its own tram rescue protocol in place, according to a city source. When the tram shut down Tuesday evening, the police were first at the scene. Fire officials got there less than 10 minutes later, at about 5:30 p.m. but later left. Deputy Commissioner Frank Gribbon, the FDNY's chief spokesman, said they did so when the tram was restarted. But police sources said the FDNY were told they could leave, with tram officials confident they would be able to get the tram running again. Regardless, fire personnel returned to the scene at about 9:30 p.m., after the tram had restarted and failed again.

What is the city hiding? Why is a police officer in charge? Ray Kelly is looking for any photo op. But at what cost, Ray? The people on the Manhattan side could have been down by 7 PM, yet Ray said we don't need the fire department. WHY:confused: The NYPD is playing games with peoples life's.

We all know that an agency that is stocked with things like laddertrucks is just not the right thing to get people down from a high place.

i get the sarcasm.

BUT  kelly's answer is to let the people stay up there for 10+ hours...i'm sure the fd uses there ladders safely everyday. so why not use them earlier in this incident. OH wait kelly wanted a photo op, screw the people that where on the tram....right.;)

The only thing I can say in his defense is that we were not there. We do not know where these trams were located (where they got stuck, that is) and what either agency was told by its operators in regards to being able to fix the problem without needing to extract them by alternate means.

So, until we get a bit more info about this, it is not fair to see things through a slanted perspective looking to get a story that people will talk about at the local StarPlucks.
