The first -- and only -- time I got mugged in NYC was on E. 1st St. between A & B.

but that was way back when the streets were mean.

it is right a ' saying' to find on Internet on east-village, without more"East Village saying" would be the correct word order. 'Adage' is another word. We get what you mean.
