When sightseeing in New York which areas should we avoid like the plague? Are there any areas that are no go zones for us small town tourists??We're staying close to Times square,is there any places we could stray and regret it in this area??
And finally, how would we get to Rockaway beach and is it worth a visit?
Thanks.

you should stick to manhattan and avoid staying in the outer boros, unless of course youre looking to save money, then by all means, stay in the outer boros or even new jersey. rockaway beach can take you up to an hour from the city and can be reached by subway, or underground, whatever you want to call it. i think its worth it if youre not into the typical touristy type stuff.

I wouldn't bother with Rockaway Beach, especially in the winter. There's not much going on out there.
I don't think there's anywhere you should be afraid of walking into. The fact that you're already worried about it indicates you probably won't be venturing off anywhere remotely unsafe.

I'm usually pretty sensible with this kind of thing so aren't too worried,it's just that places(right or wrong)get reputations that stick,we in England generally see NY in films so we all think the Bronx,Harlem etc are no go zones!!!Too much television that's our problem!!
As for Rockaway beach it's the link with the Ramones as is CBGB's,gonna do the music tourist bit!!!:)
Thanks.

You can utilize the same bus route used by the Ramones:

They boarded at 63rd Drive in Rego Park. You can get to Rego Park by subway. The hangout at Rockaway was Beach 116 Street.
Send me a PM for more information.

You can take the A train right from 8th Avenue at 42 St. to 116 St. in Rockaway.Try to catch the express, otherwise the local makes 489 stops in Brooklyn and Queens.

oh my god, ur from england. new york will be a walk in the park for u. new york is like england in many ways. americans are reputed to be more violent, but i think its not any worse than england. i personally think the youth of england are out of control and many people are afraid of them. i have a friend who is huge. he was actually a bouncer at a disco and even he is afraid to get out of his car to get money at the atm. well the main difference between england and the states is that in england, u get stabbed, in usa, u get shot.

When were you in NYC last, 1979?....NYC is and has been one of the safest (if not the safest) big cities in the US for the last 10-12 years....That should tell you enough...

The A train only goes straight to your 116 St. destination during "Rush Hour", which the NYC MTA defines as Monday-Friday, 6:30am-9:30am and 3:30pm-8pm.
All other times you must get off the A train at the Broad Channel, Queens station and transfer to the S train shuttle, which takes you to 116 Street. (The Broad Channel Station one stop after the JFK Airport station.)
_________
I have a suggestion, but it might change your hotel booking plans a little. It applies if your arrival and/or departure airport is NY-JFK:
Since 116 St./Rockaway is so near JFK Airport, consider booking a hotel room at the airport the first or last night of your vacation. Your Rockaway Beach visit can be at the very beginning or the very end of your vacation. This saves you an extra round trip to and from Manhattan.
There's an added bonus in doing this: there are a lot of international, "name brand" hotels around Kennedy Airport, and most of them are less expensive than the ones in Midtown Manhattan.:)

I hate it when that happens!
But, that's why I prefer to be Amuricun; getting stabbed is too slow!

If you'd care to read the entire article and not just the headline:
In New York, where the city reported 579 homicides through Dec. 24 — a nearly 10 percent increase from the year before — the spike is mostly the result of an unusually large number of "reclassified homicides," or those involving victims who were shot or stabbed years ago but did not die until this year. Thirty-five such deaths have been added to this year's toll, compared with an annual average of about a dozen.
At the same time, Police Department spokesman Paul Browne noted that this year's total is only slightly higher than last year's 539 homicides — the city's lowest death toll in more than 40 years.
Perhaps you need to head back to school, could do you some good.

nicksinif's an educator. He's been trying to hammer some knowledge and understanding into our heads for a while:

His teaching style, however, is not exactly progressive.
