Pier 84 rebuild.

The building will house a cafe and restrooms, and arc around a plaza and fountain at the pierhead. The pier will have a lawn, play area, boathouse, and a boardwalk opposite the Intrepid.

I wonder if they'll do anything interesting with the front of the UPS building across the DiMaggio Hiway?

Pier 84 is going to be fantastic -- it's looking like it's very close to completion, with much of the planting along the actual pier already in the ground. It seems it is just the area around the service building shown in Zip's new pics that needs to be finished now ...

Almost all the new paving along the pier has been installed. New lighting is in. The circular fountain at the foot of the pier looks to be complete.

Last night before the fireworks the interior / exterior lighting on the boathouse building at mid-pier kept going on and off --

Hoping Pier 84 will be open by November 11 (scheduled moving day for the Intrepid on its way to dry dock for cleaning / repairs).

PIER 84 OPENING CELEBRATION (http://www.wirednewyork.com/forum/)

Saturday October 21, 12 Noon - 4PM

http://www.fohrp.org/fohrp2.php?screen=events#pier

The new Pier 84, which will be completed in October, will not only be the largest public park pier along the River, it will also be spectacular, with a natural lawn and trees, lovely gardens, a boat house. a class room, a floating dock, great viewing areas far out in the River, a nearby store and snack bar, and much more.

To celebrate the completion of the Pier, Friends, in partnership with the Trust, Friends of Pier 84, the 44th Street Block Association and other groups, will sponsor a gala opening celebration on the Pier.

This will be a free event that will include food and drink, kids’ activities, games, music, boat rides, a possible marching band, exhibits, tours and who knows what else. It should be a fabulous time, and we hope to have a large turn out.

Please join us for the exciting FREE event.

Pier 84 Ribbon Cutting took place today -- the heavy rain held off until after the ceremonies (but the grey skies weren't so good for my new cell-cam) ...

The Pier & Park are fantastic.

The Governor and others made some good speeches and then cut the ribbon ...

The Pier goes out 1000 feet into the Hudson and the view up + downstream are magnificent ... to say nothing of the close-up view of the Intrepid next door ...

At the center of the pier is a terrific fountain with dancing waters ... they started it up just after the ribbon was cut.

Arranged in a circular pattern, it shoots water in varying rhythms and at times reaches 25' + into the air.

Kids of all ages will love it on hot summer days ...

Along with the boathouse (seen above) there is a kids playground (still under construction), a dog run (two pics of the first visitors below) and a "viewing garden" at the foot of Pier 84 where it meets the bikeway (a gremlin of sorts greets you as you enter the Pier) ...

I love the way it's "flush" with the ground, you can run right through. It's really beautiful.

At one point it literally gushed a flood up out of the ground -- all the folks standing nearby and admiring the pretty dancing waters were sent scurrying :D

We took our puppy to the dog run last week. She actually escaped under the fence! It needs to be repaired. So anyone with small dogs should be careful.

Anyone have an idea when this will be reopened? Nothing's mentioned on their website.

http://www.hudsonriverpark.org/explore/pier84.html

We noticed how many cracked and loose stone tiles kept manifesting and it seems they are replacing many. Hard to tell with the pier being fenced off.

thanks

Good question, I have been trying to find out myself. Seems they are replacing just about all of the stone walkways on the pier.

Yeah. We just moved to the neighborhood last summer and the pier was a great place to go but I was surprised at how many were chipped, loose or cracked. (Didn't it just open 4 years ago?)
I hope they have it open for the summer.

Well, it's been reopened. Looks like they just stopped with the new tiles. Up until a week or so ago there were huge slabs of them sitting off to the side and we thought they would re-tile the whole thing,

Looks a little wonky imho but at least it's open again... My daughter in pic. was happy... :)

I think they were very behind schedule and since that is also a NY Water Taxi landing that had been closed, there was pressure involved maybe to re-open on schedule.

I'm sorry but that's no excuse... down by Chelsea piers just two days before they opened to the public,
there were huge swaths of walkway that needed to be tiled over...
They got it done in no time flat.

Pier 84
Construction Alert

Please be advised that as of Friday, May 21, 2010, the over-water portion of Pier 84 has reopened to the public. Although the full repair work to the pavers is not yet complete, the pier will remain open to the public while the work continues. Over the next several week, there may be a need to close specific areas of the pier to finish the work, but we do not envision needing the pier to be completely closed during this process. We thank you for your patience and understanding as this necessary repair work continues.
