What sort of job are you looking for? I don't think most people would be hiring for summer at this point.

My only suggestion is to get teh Sunday NYT every other week and start asking.

Also, Schade is right in that you have to tell us what you are looking for. If you are a college student looking to intern in the field you are studying, it is good to start researching the firms that do that and send out letters of interest to ALL of their HR departments even if they are not advertising any job positions available.

If you are looking for a job at Duane Reede, then we really cannot help you much.....

I've heard they're always looking for lifeguards at the city beaches.

I want to work at Duane Reade during my first year at Pace. Internships dont start until completion of freshman year. has anyone heard if getting a job at DR is hard to come by? Thanks!

I think getting a job at Duane Reade is pretty easy.

How did you decide that you wanted to work there?

Well, Ive worked as a cashier before, and ive been into many when I come up. It just seems cool to be a cashier there. :) I hope I can obtain a position! Anyone know anyone who can get me in! <grin>

I think Duane Reade only pays minimum wage.

I enjoyed working at Dean & Deluca one summer in college. I made $10.00 an hour, and this was way back in 1996.

Well, the fact is, Im going to need a part time job when I come up. I want retail. I hope I can get one. I always see the cashiers at DR and think, "I'd like to work here."

You might think twice when you find out they make $6.00 an hour.

Ninjahedge
March 14th, 2005, 05:02 PM
And that NYC, in general, costs $7.50 an hour.

NewYorkYankee

I thought minimum wage in NY was upped?

You'll be able to find something in NY, Duane Reade or not.

That's definitely true. Retail jobs are very easy to come by, especially in the summer.

NewYorkYankee
March 14th, 2005, 09:41 PM
Oh really? Retail jobs here are a bitch to get! You have to fight tooth and nail to get one!

Not the case in Manhattan, they're at the bottom of the rung and I would assume would pay more than minimum wage on account of its location in Manhattan.

Im a architecture student in scotland. Ive sent resume to some companies in new york but the office if metropolitan architecture is the only one asking for a portfolio so Im basically looking for any easy job eg retail, in bakery any stupid thing like that you dont really need qualifications for. Would I need training to be a lifeguard? and where could i apply?

From nyc.gov (http://www.nyc.gov/portal/index.jsp?epi_menuItemID=c0935b9a57bb4ef3daf2f1c70 1c789a0&epi_menuID=13ecbf46556241d3daf2f1c701c789a0&epi_baseMenuID=27579af732d48f86a62fa24601c789a0&pageID=mayor_press_release&catID=1194&doc_name=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nyc.gov%2Fhtml%2Fom%2Fht ml%2F2004a%2Fpr133-04.html&cc=unused1978&rc=1194&ndi=1)

"Candidates for lifeguard positions must be 16 years or older, swim 50 yards in 35 seconds, and complete 40 hours of training, including CPR instruction. The City still has lifeguard openings, and potential applicants should call 311."

...however the parks department website states it wants experienced lifeguards:
http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_opportunities/employment/lifeguard.html

...and there are other positions in the parks department:

Its so hard to get a job in this town! If anyone has any additional info on finding a summer job that would be great. Ive got a feeling the fact im a foreign student coming for only summer may be putting them off. I might have to settle for a job in Wildwood, new jersey and you wouldnt wish that on me would you!

NYatKNIGHT

Why do you say that? I know people who actually vacation in Wildwood. It's not New York by any stretch, but then again a lot of New Yorkers flee for the shore for the summer. I can think of worse ways to spend the hot months.

Hi,
I'm considering trying to find a palce to work in NY this summer, where are the best places to look for offers? I don't mind working in Queens, Manhattan or Brooklyn... I went to NY in Feb, and was my first time in the US, and I loved it, would like to come back..... and also, are there any websites which have job lsitings, of retail jobs (i think that's what they're called, what I mean, is basic jobs as a cashier)... Also where is the normal places to look for adverts for renting a room etc....? Here, you'd be looking in the psot office, but where should I be looking, either online, or locally, in shop windows or where?

Thanks,
Dan

Hey everyone, I am looking for a job this summer, I live in the city, and know it very well. I have had a good education attending an elite boarding school, and am looking for a job. I will not be going to college this following year because I plan on taking a year abroad. However I will be applying to most Ivy League schools and so on. I am looking for ideas on what kind of job I should try to have this summer. If you have any in mind that pay well, and are somewhat exciting let me know, preferably a job that requires intellectual knowledge, because I do enjoy interacting with people. If you have any good Ideas please post them. Thank you very Much

All the Best, Alex

I just completed my first year of college (I'm 18) and want to find a job for the summer. Doesn't matter if it's part time or full time. I'm not looking for an internship. I'm just looking for a simple job, preferably in retail. I wouldn't mind working in Manhattan but prefer Brooklyn because I live in Brooklyn (Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights Area). Can anyone tell me what stores I should look in? Or does anyone know of a place that's hiring? Thanks.

Work for the Circle Line Ferry or Staten Island Ferry...... jobs on the water usually make noticeably more than jobs on land

Like a lot of the people that posted before in this thread, I too, am looking for a summer job for possibly next summer. I'm stalking the CraigsList Rooms & Shared page (http://newyork.craigslist.org/roo/), hoping that a cheap, reasonable place will show up. However, if I do decide to stay in New York City next summer, I've got a while to plan as to where I will be living. :p Now to my questions...

Wages: I did a Google search for current NYC wages and found that the current minimum wage is $7.15? Is this correct? Also, on the same website, it said that in July of 2009, the min. wage will raise 10 cents to $7.25. Is this correct as well?

Craig's List: When looking at part time jobs on the site (preferably in the area of retail), I notice that a LOT of posts have no phone numbers to call, and just say to email a resume to them. Do I use the email that is posted at the top of the job opening page? I've never used Craig's List before, so I'm still trying to get used to it.

Thanks,
Ben

Re: Craigslist email

Click the highlighted link and that will get you the email connection for the post.

Don't give too much personal info on the first email -- just an email contact (and never your SSN).

Ok thank you lofter. I'll be searching around Craig's List a lot tonight since I don't have to work.
