SOM NY is returning to its modernist convictions, first initiated under Burnshaft, and while the forms aren't particularly exciting the facades are:

Some update news finally...
http://newyork.construction.com/images/2006/May06HigherEd-CUNY-59thSt.jpg
For example, a new 600,000-sq.-ft. building planned at 11th Avenue and 59th Street in Manhattan for John Jay College of Criminal Justice specifically targets overcrowding in the rapidly expanding academic program.
"Even with the new building, John Jay will have one of the lowest square-foot-to-student ratios in the system," Moore-Wilk said.
The $457 million North Hall project will include a 14-story tower clad in a glass curtain wall. A low-rise structure with a landscaped outdoor area on its roof will link the tower to John Jay's existing Haaren Hall.
The project was slated to begin earlier this year, but legal issues have delayed demolition at the site. A major stumbling point is a pending agreement with Amtrak, the passenger rail carrier, to ensure proper ventilation of a rail tunnel running beneath the site.

Can't wait for this to go up. The existing garage is an eyesore, and I'm always happy when otherwise useless land (like that small section of open track at the corner of 58th (?) and WEA) is finally built on.

Will this building be located directly behind the beautiful John Jay structure on Amsterdam? Also, John Jay occupies a POS structure on the east side of Amsterdam diagonally across from the nice one. Does anyone know if that will be razed and sold to a developer once the new building has been completed?
PS: Is the new building already UC?

^^ I'm actually not sure about that one. I think that you are refering to North Hall, which was built in the early 70s by John Jay.
I don't know a lot of about John Jay, or other Cuny schools, but I'm under the impression that John Jay has doubled or tripled in enrollment since the mid 80s, which may mean that the POS is an integral part of their campus (as well as a total eye sore)

^ A little bit of both I would guess.
North Hall will come down and probably be sold to a developer. That makes lots of sense both logistically and financially.
After this new building goes up, they'd move over there and sell NH.
Let's hope that happens 'cause like LL said, NH is really a piece of #&$@.

I am trying to figure out what the footprint of the highrise portion will be. Do you experts out there think it will be the entire area where they have started the steel construction, or is part of that the connection to the lowrise (so that maybe the highrise starts not with the leftmost steel upright but the one second from the left or something)?

Why is it that even a simple, unassuming, utilitarian building from the past has a ton more and better architectural detailing than pretty much any of the buildings from today, even ones that try their darnedest to copy it?
(Question was rhetorical, I already know answer).
By the way, I hope that when they no longer have a need for this building, it gets preserved and that they don't tear it down or reclad it.

I wonder the same thing.
Like why these billionaire developers don't build a building of actual quality, with details.
Is it really that hard, or did we lose all of the talented craftsmen of the last century.
I don't want to say we're digressing architecturally, but why not a little more diversity?
15 CPW was a good try, but still pretty bland up close considered to this rotten old utility building.

It is a skill that for the most part has been lost.
The generations of architects since the 1950's only know how to draw geometric lines because that's all they're taught and expected to do.

They jumped the crane this week (I have pictures of that if folks are interested) -- it was fascinating to watch the process. But now I am wondering, since the building is going up around the crane, how are they going to disassemble the crane's mast? If it were on the outside of the building it could disassemble itself with the cab just going down as it took pieces out of the mast. But it seems like somehow they are going to have to get another crane up high enough to pull the mast sections up and out through the shaft?

it doesn't particularly look like the "saddle" will be set back any more than the "tower".

To be fair, they've been liberated by computers to indulge in complex forms, such as those of Nouvel, Calatrava and Gehry. If they're not artists like those gents, they're free to hang themselves with unforeseen effects, as at Bank of America.

Nearing full height. If I count right there are two more stories on the tall portion yet to come, and the "saddle" has reached full height in some sections. Looking forward to completion and to seeing the garden they're supposed to put on top of the saddle.
BTW I hear that the decaying swimming pool outside the 59th street rec center is supposed to be filled in, and that section of the block made into a park. Yay!

Aren't all of the complex building shapes that have proliferated in recent years due to computer-aided design?
These old brick buildings, which obviously were not computer-aided, have some really superb shapes although they tend to be purely geometric and not waivy.

John Jay College's New Building Melds Architecture and Academics on the Far Westside
NEW YORK, Nov. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Dynamic Design Creates an Integrated Campus in One New York City Block
To meet John Jay College of Criminal Justice's evolving academic and spatial needs, the College today opened a state-of-the-art building on 59th Street between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. The new 625,000 square foot facility, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is a concrete manifestation of John Jay's efforts to solidify its place as the preeminent leader in "educating for justice." This new building will not only bring a sense of community to a commuter college but also provide a facelift to the emerging Far Westside.
