Hello, i am a 19 year architecture student who is looking to work in NY during summer. I would like help and advise about best summer jobs and accomodation. where are the best places to find this on the internet. What areas are best and most realisticly affordable to live. I have been to new york twice before, am comfortable using the subway and i know manhattan pretty well.

Thanks,

Craig

You could try to get a college dorm room for the summer at NYU, Columbia, Hunter etc... they are the cheapest, but they also go the fastest. Check out the various college websites for more info.

Other than that, you should try to find roommates. The more people in the apartment (six bedrooms, for example) the cheaper the rent per person. It can also be more fun with more people - if you are all college students with a similar lifestyle.

As for a job, apply for an internship at one of the dozens of top architectural firms in the city. The pay won't be great but it would be a great foot in the door.

Good luck and enjoy your New York summer.

Any idea of how to go about getting internships and how many may be available? I hope to move to new york after i get my degree and hopefully do the two years work needed to obtain it in NYC.

Thanks!

You can get college dorm rooms for the summer while students are away?

Yes. That's what many college-age people do during the summer. It's much easier than trying to find a temporary sublet.

Barnard also offers reasonable rates on their dorm rooms.

To Get An Internship:

- Make a list of every architectural firm (or other company that interests you) that you can find in the City.
- Check out each Company's website for information on summer internships.
- Send your resume and cover letter to all of them.

You need to get started right now if you want a decent internship this summer (most will have already started filling up their slots). Also, if you are from Scotland - there will be student-work visa stuff that you need to take care of well before the summer. Your university's Career Office should be able to help you with a lot of this.

It's the only college I'm aware of that allows non-students to stay in the dorms.
