I just started this week at my local 2-year school, which offers an Associate's degree (I don't know where I'll transfer after that). I already have a BA in History, and I've worked for a few years in the pubishing industry, but I decided on a new direction over the course of this past Spring and Summer. Losing my job had something to so with it , but it's something I've always wanted to do. Well, maybe in a few years all you guys will be criticizing something I did...

That's why you lost your job, it was meant to be. Good luck!

dhb - I find your story quite intriguing. I'm practically in the same boat you were in. I'll get my English degree this upcoming spring and was looking at the publishing industry. Was it enjoyable work? I was thinking of doing the NYU summer workshop. How hard was it to land a job? Did you make enough to live in NY?
I think it's so cool you're switching directions and going to architect school. What prerequisites one must need to be accepted.
Send me an email, I need some guidance. PaceBM@hotmail.com
And best of luck this upcoming fall in school.

Good luck DBH. I hope you get the chance to design some thousand footers for us :) I have a question for you. It is similar to the questions yesisaideyesiwillyes asked. What did you do as prerequisites to get into Architect school? Did you take many art classes? Many engineering classes? Do you need to take those things first or will they accept you with no experience? Just in case I know anyone who would like to switch fields ;)

I haven't really gotten into the meat and bones of the classes yet, but I can tell you that there are no pre-requisites. I'm going to be taking all the necessary basic drafting, design, drawing, and engineering classes these two years. The whole point of the program is to build a background and a portfolio and then transfer to an acccredited institution. It was quite a revelation when I realized I could do that. And it's relatively inexpensive, so if it doesn't work out, it's no skin off my back.
If you've never been to a community college, though, there is kind of a permanent summer school vibe going on, and I'm the oldest guy in my class.

Sorry to be a nuisance, but what school are you going to? I'd be interested in finding a cheap 2 year school to get a background in this also.
Forgot to mention, you are also probably more knowledgeable about architecture than anyone in your class. You can be the oldest AND the smartest :)

I'm going to Mercer County College (don't forget I'm in Jersey). It's outside Trenton and a long drive for me, but it should be worthwhile. I'd have gone to CUNY, but out-of-state rates make it too expensive for me. They have a 2-year associate's program on Staten Island that ties in to their BS program if you choose. I'd reccomend that to any New Yorker that, like me, doesn't have a background in architecture but wants to get one.

I wish the very best for you in Architecture school. Lots of work and staying up late I hear. You'll do well.
