I guess that the elevators and infrastructure are housed in the central urethra -- err...core.

It's curious that the floorplates are missing. The odd construction method might be indicative of the tower's originality.

Architects:

Atelier Jean Nouvel (Paris). Chief architect: Jean Nouvel

b720 Arquitectura (Barcelona). Chief architects: Fermín Vázquez, Adriana Plasencia and Ana Bassat.

Makeup:

The Torre Agbar is based on the fusion of two opposing ideas: the lightness of glass and the massiveness of concrete.

Form:

Two non-concentric cylinders, with oval floors, made of concrete up to the 26th floor, emerging from a pool of water. Seemingly random perforations shape the windows, bringing to mind the image of a fractal.

From this point on, the weightless dome of glass and steel rises. The inner cylinder houses the stairs, facilities and special lifts. Between the inner and outer rings is the open workspace, free from the obstruction of pillars.

The six main lifts are located around the perimeter, from which users will have an excellent view of the city of Barcelona.

Surfaces:

The concrete is covered in aluminium, that will bring colour to the complex softening the 16,000 m² of facade.

Thousands of panes of glass (120 x 30 cm), some transparent, others translucent, will cover the entirety of the building’s emergent surface, acting as a sunshade.

Dates:

Construction commencing: February 2001
Opening: December 2003
