Sorry, I wasnt sure if it was solved by what thomasjfletcher posted, I accept responsibility. I think its a painting at the Met or MoMA... or maybe an exhibit at some other museum.
It's a detail from a lithograph poster, not a painting. I doubt that either the Met or MoMA has a copy, but the Museum of the City of New York does (and so do I). The question is what location is depicted in the poster.

Bowbridge's got it. The image (Lady Liberty's severed head) is from Joseph Pennell's 1918 poster showing lower Manhattan in flames during a German air and naval attack, a capability that Kaiser Bill fortunately lacked. Over 2,000,000 copies of the poster were distributed.

Correct, the Plaza Hotel.
The inside pics are from the 7,800 sq ft suite on the 18th floor. No, I didn't stay there, as the price was a little steep - $15,000 per night.
I got a quick look at a part of it while the hotel was doing the liquidation sale. I would have liked to have seen the whole thing, but these were the only shots I was able to get.

Thomasjfletcher: I did some research, and while I wasn't aware of it, you're right - there is a "little Korea" in Midtown. It's mostly referred to as "Koreatown" or K-Town, and is a very small area. The boundary is most often described as "31st to 36th between 5th & 6th avenue." The "main drag" is supposed to be on 32nd street, between 5th & Broadway. Still, that's pretty close to the actual location of the sky bridge.

95% of the time I visit the city, Penn Station is my gateway to it all, and this is one of those things that I've noticed and wondered about since childhood (so it has that magical dimension in my mind). From the exit at 32nd and 7th it looks very ethereal, almost like a two-dimensional painting floating high above. Great to know a little something about it.

This little gem is the smallest member of the two architectural triptychs of the 32nd-34th Street cross-town corridor: McKim, Mead & White's Post Office, Penn Station and Hotel Pennsylvania and Shreve, Lamb & Harmon's Gimbel's sky-bridge, ESB and 3 Park Avenue.

"Like Roosevelt and North Brother Islands, these two artificial islands off Staten Island's southeast coast (off South Beach) were used to quarantine infectious patients in the 1800s and early 20th Century. Named for NYC Mayor John Hoffman and Civil War Army surgeon Dr. John Swinburne, the islands were formed from dredged sand in the 1860s. The facilities were closed on both islands by the end of the 1930s. The buildings were gone by the Sixties and the islands have languished since then."

A barium meal is a procedure in which barium sulfate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barium_sulfate) is ingested by a patient and, in conjunction with X-rays (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-ray), images depicting the digestive system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digestive_system): the distal esophagus, stomach and duodenum, are obtained. There are two varieties of barium meal, these being single and double contrast meals. A single contrast meal uses only barium to image the upper gastrointestinal tract while a double contrast meal uses barium as well as air. The double contrast meal has the advantage of demonstrating mucosal details and so is much more useful as a diagnostic test allowing the detection of small mucosal lesions.

Start vague, like "East West North or South"
Then if we are still obtuse, narrow it down. Give a Boro or something.
I haven't the slightest clue where this could be. I see no big buildings in the background and no real signage.

South of the Lefferts house and midway between the Willink Entrance and Carousel stands a Flatbush toll booth believed to be the last of its kind in existence. In style it belongs to the middle of the nineteenth century, and it may date from 1854, when what is currently Flatbush Avenue was opened from the Village of Flatbush to Prospect Hill, or, more likely, from 1855, the year of the inception of the Brooklyn, Flatbush and Jamaica Plank Road Company. The pavilion stood on the west side of the pike, between present Winthrop and Fenimore streets, until 1893, when the Flatbush Road Company -- successor to the Plank Road concern -- went out of existence. Given to the last Flatbush Road Commissioner, John Moore, the booth was removed to the backyard of a dwelling at the corner of Tilden Avenue and 28th Street. Some 40 years later, the relic came to the attention of Joseph N. Neff, President of the Chamber of Commerce, through whose efforts it was rescued and presented to the City of New York by the Flatbush Chamber of Commerce. Thus, in 1925, like its historic neighbor seven years earlier, it was given sanctuary in that part of Prospect Park proper to its native township. The Toll House is an octagonal frame structure with vertical-board siding. Alternate faces are pierced by a door and three shuttered windows, and it is crowned by a concave hipped roof with overhanging eaves. The building contains a single room.
ZippyTheChimp

clap-clap-clap.
It's hard to say when the toll booth dates from , because there were many of them, and they were shifted around the county. But all were on the road system that was derived from Indian trails.
Before Europeans arrived, there existed a council meeting place near what became the village of Bedford (Fulton St & Bedford Ave). Tribes from New Jersey would cross the Hudson River to a place near Christopher St, where a creek from the Collect Pond emptied into the river. At the Collect, another creek flowed into the East Rive3r at Peck Slip, providing the Indians with a water route across Manhattan. They crossed the East River to a landing at the north dropoff of the Brooklyn Heights ridge (Fulton Landing). The crossing is where the Dutch put their ferry, and Roebling built his bridge. The trail led east generally along Fulton St to the meeting place, and continued east as what later became Jamaica Ave.
The Canarsee tribe travelled north from Jamaica Bay on Bedford Creek, then on a trail which later became Flatbush Road.
The Dutch widened these trails into what was known as the Ferry Road, the fork near the present Flatbush-Atlantic junction.
http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Town/Ferry/FerryRd.jpg
In 1704, these roads and their feeders were improved, and the entire network was called the Kings Highway. What remains today as Kings Highway is the east-west branch at Flatbush.
In 1803, a law was passed to upgrade the roads from the ferry through Kings, Queens and Suffolk Counties. Under the General Turnpike Act of 1807, the Brooklyn, Jamaica & Flatbush Turnpike Company was incorporated in 1809. Some of the incorporators are familiar street names: John Ditmars, Barent Lefferts, Cornelius Bergen. The company was responsible for the road from the ferry landing out to Jamaica village, and the branch south to Flatbush village.
Toll booths were set up at various points along these roads. One collection point was at the border between the city of Brooklyn and Flatbush township - the intersection of Flatbush Turnpike and Malbone St. Malbone St was the site of a train wreck in 1918 in which 93 people were killed, and the street name was changed to Empire Blvd. The Flatbush Turnpike was to the west of the present Flatbush Ave, within the borders of the not yet envisioned Prospect Park.
In 1856, the city of Brooklyn replaced the old winding Flatbush Turnpike within its borders with the straightened Flatbush Ave. The segments of the old Ferry Road that ran through the villages of Flatbush and Flatlands were also eventually straightened as Flatbush Ave, and extended south to Barren Island.
A portion of the old road remains as Amersfort Pl, near Brooklyn College. Amersfoort was the Dutch name for Flatlands.

Is that the tenement musuem at 97 orchard?
I haven't been there in a little while, but I remember that some rooms / floors in the tenement museum were left in a state of disrepair (although that picture looks a lot worse)
my second guess would be my first new york apartment.

Not the Tenement Museum. But VERY generally that guess is in the same segment of NYC.

I find it interesting that I started this thread, game, and now there's new rules. Im not saying that I have a problem with it, I just find it interesting.
The only rule that I really care about is one guess the location at a time. As far as the person who guessed it, I dont think it should be their responsibility to post the next question, if they have one great, and maybe they should be allotted sometime to post one, but if they don't have a good guess the location what is their option? It would then become a punishment for winning the round as they scramble to find a picture they want to post that would challenge the forum.

Posted two years ago:
Simple ground rule to keep the thread orderly:
One puzzle at a time
If you have a location to post, you're going to have to solve the existing item. Originators are encouraged to provide clues along the way to keep it moving.
Next is whoever posts the next one.
There's no line.

Sorry for the misread, but this kind of implies that the person who solves gets rights to the next one.
I kind of agree about Stern's middle ground position. It is only fair that we give the last person to solve a day to post their own before opening it back up again.
But whatever you guys decide!
