So, I like to fish and would love to spend some time outside the city, in fact outside any city. Having grown up with nature outside my back door, this is sort of what I am looking for. Just a small water-body, lake, whatever, preferably in some woodland-area. I hear people talking about areas both in NJ and upstate NY, but I haven't really picked up on any locations in specific.
Anyone got any recommendations?

Random picture, but to catch my drift.

As a kid, my dad would take me upstate to fish in the Reservoirs that serve NYC...They were quiet and peaceful and only about 1 and a half to 2 hours north of the city....This website will offer some good info regarding permits and locations http://bearsystems.com/Reservoirs/reservoirs.html
Hope this helps.

Willowemoc Creek, Beaver Kill.
About 120 miles from Lower Manhattan. I87 to Route 17.

Closer to the city, there are lakes for fishing in Harriman State Park.

Also in NJ look into Waywayanda State Park in Sussex County, the Delaware Water Gap in Warren County, etc.. The Skylands of Northwestern New Jersey are absolutely beautiful.
Here is the link to NJ State Parks, do some searching, I promise you will find more than one place that piques your interest.
