200th Anniversary Parade and Schedule of Events
June 7, 2009

During the next six years, St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral will celebrate historic milestones of our ministry of worship and service to the community.

The first milestone was the laying of the cornerstone of New York City’s first cathedral church on June 8, 1809. To commemorate this milestone, a day long series of events will take place on Sunday, June 7, 2009.

The day will begin with a celebratory Mass with Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan, followed by a parade with floats, thousands of marchers and performers who will wind their way through the streets of the neighborhood. Entertainment, historic displays and an array of culinary delights from area restaurants will reflect the ethnic and cultural changes that have occurred over the past 200 years.

A highlight of the parade will be a reenactment of New York State’s legendary 69th Regiment militia marching in front of the Cathedral on their way to the battlefields of the Civil War on April 23, 1861.

Old Saint Patrick's Cathedral Parade 2009

The NY 69th Regiment marching past the corner of Mott & Prince Streets, April 23, 1861:

New York, New York. On April 23, 1861, Colonel Michael Corcoran’s 69th Regiment of the New York State Militia marched past St. Patrick’s Cathedral on its way to the nation’s capital in response to President Lincoln’s call for the militia to “execute the laws of the Union” and “suppress insurrections” following the firing on Fort Sumter.

The 69th NYSV Historical Association (http://www.69thnysv.org/), Inc. and Company “A” 69th Regiment, New York State Volunteers (together, the “69th NYSV”) has been asked to form a contingent of Civil War Re-enactors to recreate the march of the original 69th at noon on June 7, 2009. Consequently the 69th NYSV is asking fellow living historians to join the effort to fill the ranks of a recreated 69th Regiment, New York State Militia for the day.

The parade is being held to mark the 200th anniversary of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral located at the corner of Prince and Mott Streets in lower Manhattan. Joining the recreated 69th will be contingents form the New York City Police Department, the Fire Department of the City of New York, societies from the Irish, Italian and Chinese communities of New York City that St. Patrick’s serves and most importantly the “Fighting Sixty-Ninth”

Included in the festivities for this event is a walking tour of lower Manhattan on the afternoon of Saturday, June 6th to be followed by a reception at the historic 69th Regiment Armory that evening. Although we have no registration fee for this event, The walking tour costs $20 per person and is limited to the first 25 registered and paid participants. The parade will take place the following day, Sunday June 7th. For those interested, billeting is available for participants in the 69th NY Armory on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan on Saturday June 6th.

69TH NEW YORK HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION

May 4, 2009

Dear Friends and Comrades:

The 69th New York State Volunteers (NYSV) Historical Association, Inc. and Company A, 69th Regiment, NYSV cordially invite you to join in our efforts to recreate a significant event in the history of the 69th Regiment, New York State Militia and the Archdiocese of New York on Sunday June 7, 2009. Enclosed you will find information about this unique event.

On Tuesday April 23, 1861, the 69th Regiment of the New York State Militia under the command of Colonel Michael Corcoran left the City of New York to assist in the defense of the nation’s capital following the firing on Fort Sumter some two weeks earlier. Forming up on Great Jones Street, it march down Broadway and took a detour to pass St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Mulberry Street which was the spiritual center of the Irish Immigrant community in the mid-19th century. This event was captured in a lithograph that was created by the firm Saxony, Major & Knapp, a copy of which is enclosed.

In commemoration of the 69th’s parade and the 200th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone for the Old Cathedral, we have been asked to march with the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment as known as “The Fighting Sixty-Ninth”, and contingents from New York’s Finest, the NYPD, New York’s Bravest, the FDNY and the Irish, Italian and Chinese communities that St. Patrick’s has served since it opened its doors some 200 years ago. This is a unique opportunity for those of us who portray the American Soldier of the 19th century to march with one of the most decorated regiments in the history of the US Army that can trace its origins to this exact location and most of the battlefields of the eastern theater of the Civil War.

The parade is scheduled to step off at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday June 7. Pending further direction from the parade committee, we will form at the 69th Regiment Armory located at 68 Lexington Avenue between East 25th and East 26th Streets at 11:00 a.m. We will depart the Armory at 11:30 a.m. and travel by subway to the parade assembly area. You can expect the parade itself to take about an hour. After the end of the parade we will travel back up to the Armory for dismissal.

We are indebted to Lieutenant Colonel Andonie, Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment for granting us use of the 69th Regiment Armory as our staging area for the parade. For those traveling from out of town, we have been granted permission to billet in the Armory on the evening of June 6. While the Armory is warm and sheltered, the accommodations are rough. There are male and female rest room facilities with showers, but everyone will have to provide their own bedding, toiletries, etc. There will be no parking in the Armory. There is plenty of parking on the neighboring streets and there are several parking lots in the vicinity.

The day will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday with the first call and unit assembly on the Armory Drill Shed. After all companies are organized, we will proceed to the subway and move to parade assembly area. You can expect to be on your feet for two to three hours during the day. At the end of the Parade we will return to the Armory by subway where all can recover their vehicles and return home.

Andy Megill of Company A, 69th Regiment, NYSV will have overall field command. Company commands will largely be a function of the numbers each unit musters. We are planning on at least two companies, the first will have a 69th Regiment New York State Militia impression, the second and if required any additional companies will have a generic mid-war infantry impression as a token of respect to the three New York volunteer regiments (69th, 88th 182nd) that 69th Militia members helped form. There are no other impressions allowed and no specialty impressions. All commissioned and non-commissioned officer impressions must be coordinated with us, so that a historically accurate portrayal of the 69th may be maintained.

Authentic civilians are welcome, and will march at the front of the military force. Non-period civilians are also welcome and can march immediately behind the military force.

If there is sufficient interest we conducting a walking tour of “Irish New York” on Saturday, June 6th at 3:00 p.m. to be followed by a reception at the Armory at 6:00 p.m., Saturday evening for those staying overnight at the Armory. The tour guide charges twenty dollars per person.

We will send out an update in the next two weeks.

Your obedient servant,

Ronald P. McGovern

Blake Carrington Cathedral Scan CD Release Concert (http://www.blakecarrington.com/CScanConcert.php)
Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral

BLAKE CARRINGTON (http://blakecarrington.com/016.php#016b)

Cathedral Scan translates the architectural plans of Gothic cathedrals into open-ended musical scores via custom software. Treating the plans as a map, in the live performance Carrington navigates through them to create diverse rhythms, drones and textures. Visually, the scanning suggests a metaphor between architecture and ghost-like palimpsest. The concert at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral will feature large-scale projection and sound performed specifically for the venue's impressive acoustics.

The full-length album is edited from a previous live concert in a large church, and combines the direct signal created in software with the immense natural reverberation of the performance space.
