Hey, Just wondering which breed everyone has and if theres a particular reason why? Especially interested to hear from those people who have some of the larger breeds. x

The big brown dog is my flat-coated retriever of ten years. He died exactly one week ago of a tumor-induced stroke:

Flat-coats are phenomenal dogs. In ten years, I never saw him once get angry, growl, snarl or bear his teeth at adults, kids or other dogs. He would bark from time to time and so might deter intruders, but if a burglar broke in, the dog would more likely lick him than bite him.

Flat-coats are very similar to golden retrievers: they are fairly large (90lbs), were bred to retrieve waterfowl and love the water. Flat-coatsare called the "Peter Pan" of dogs because they retain their puppy playfulness and energy throughout their lives.

The downside is that they have relatively short lifespans (9.75 years on average), and they are outdoor dogs, requiring a lot of exercise and attention (could be an upside).

Almost all retrievers are great that way.

The downside being that if you are a city dweller, they are probably not the pooch for you. They really love water and, well, RETRIEVING!!!! ;). The only other downside is that, especially in the spring, they shed like crazy!

Other ups and downs depend on the pooch. Lifespan is short (:(), breath can really be, well, dog breath, and they are relatively intelligent and can get into things on occasion (not as bad as some of teh smaller breeds though).

I love them, but being in Hoboken, we would not be able to care for them as they would need........
