I will be comin over in the next year to stay for about 6months after i finish my apprentiship, i have been NY 3 tiimes before so i know what its about and i also know its very expensive, I would look at stayin in New Jersey as im sure the accomodation/rent is much cheaper.

Whats the different and best ways to get from NJ to NY (no drivin), how long does it take and how much does it cost? Where in new does it take me to? I have heard of the PATH train.

Also, am i right in thinkin that places to rent in NJ are much cheaper then in NY.

Would appreciate the help, thanks

You are right. You may want to post in the other forum subsection, NY Metro. Some more ardent NJ posters might be able to help you with a place to stay, or rent, in Jersey City or Newark.

Hoboken is nice, but rent is high (unless you get rent control, which IS possible) and the only hotel, I believe, is the new "W" hotel which might be open, but is probably not cheap!!!!

Im from Jersey City here. There is great mass transit in Jersey City and Hoboken. The PATH is a subway system that runs between Lower and Mid-Town Manhattan into Jersey City, Hoboken, and Newark. From JC to Manhattan takes around 25minutes. The Hudson Bergen lightrail runs from Bayonne through Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City/West New York, and North Bergen. It connects bus routes and the PATH system. Downtown Jersey City mostly brownstones but expensive. JSQ has historically been the center of the city and is beign redeveloped currently. The JC Heights is old Victorian mansions on Summit Ave with many multi family and two family apartments and homes. The main shopping drag is Central Ave. I will post links to maps and information.

I live in NY and travel to NJ for university, so I can give you a heads up on only the time issue. If you are close to PATH or other train commutes (or NY Waterways if you are by the Hudson), its a very doable and quick commute. It takes me about 25min from WTC to Newark, and that is the longest PATH commute. Exchange Place in JC to WTC is just a couple of minutes for example.

One thing to keep in mind is that the commutes going "mainstream direction" are packed like a stuffed turkey. When I see the PATH coming in from Jersey people are almost falling out of the doors when they open. (On the other way they are almost empty, so I'm happy enough :)).

But yeah, timewise its definitely doable. Not going to be very pleasant if you're bound to commute in rush hour though.

That being said, you're only stating NJ and NY, and those areas are pretty huge and you should probably narrow your locations down a bit more before getting too committed to this advice.
