I'm a second semester freshmen @ Columbia U in NYC and I need a nightlife! First semester was really hard therefore I didn't explore the city, but I think this semester should be easier so I want to explore the nightlife.
I'm not from the US so I don't know what the night club etiquette is in this country. In my city clubs are very strict; people must adhere to dress clothes policies, and in most clubs only the who's who can get in. I never had a problem going to clubs in my country since I am fortunate to come from a well known family, but I'm a stranger in a land with very little class structures and need some advice.
1. What are some of the hottest NYC night spots?
2. How hard is it to get in? Are there guest lists? How to get on the lists? I hate standing on lines.
3. What are dress clothes policies in NYC?
4. Any and all other advice would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I know the post seems somewhat snobbish but it's not meant to sound that way. I simply want to give some background information, and why I'm a bit loss at the NYC nightlife. I'm just a young guy trying to have fun like everyone else.

You are posting at 3:30am in the morning on a Friday as your first post?
It seems coherent, so you obviosly have not been drinking or up studying.
What gives?
Second semester Frosh is nt going to get you into much of anything worthwhile. Stick to the concert scene and save your cash for them and you will have a lot more fun.

Try Pink Elephant, it's not really hard to get in, and, dressing code shouldn't be a problem in nyc as long you have your common sense.
Hmm.. NOW for the advice. As a student, study well.

Thanks for responding, I've been extremely busy the past week... school is has kicked in on high gear.

I had too much coffee to drink and could not sleep. I was really bored and seeking advice. Colombia has less than attractive girls... I should have gone to NYU :D, but yea you could tell by the time I posted that I'm a night owl. Actually, I don't drink at all, and that's why I asked about club policies I heard at some discos or comedy clubs you have to buy a drink minimum, and I really hate alcohol. Studying on the other hand, I do a lot.

Hi Canada, thanks for responding. I've heard about Pink Elephant and I think I've passed it one night... is it near 25-26th street? If it is I saw people with sneakers on. Do they have non-alcoholic drinks? Are they expensive? I mean what is the drink policy?
Thanks,
