So tomorrow I have a friend coming in to town, she wants to go into the city for the day but its going to be absolutely freezing. I am trying to think of some stuff that we can do where we wont have to be outside very much. So far I have thought of going to the Met, shopping, or doing a tour. She says she likes doing less touristy things and eating at whole in the wall places, so I am running out of ideas. This cold weather is really putting a damper on things.
Any ideas would be helpful!
Thanks

Walk on the sunny side of the street. Seriously. Today I was out and about in the early afternoon -- in the sun it was brisk and invigorating, but if I crossed into the shade it was mean and nasty and biting.
If you like to imbibe a bit and there's no sun & it's just plain cold then downing a shot of this or that every 25 - 30 blocks might help  .
MoMA at $20 each can be pricey but the Marlene Dumas exhibit [ Marlene Dumas: Measuring Your Own Grave (http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=3994&ref=calendar) ] is worthwhile (that covers an hour or two). Plus MoMA's big psychedelic lounging sofa in the main exhibit space [ Pipilotti Rist: Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters) (http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=9760&ref=calendar) see below ] is way cool and could even serve for a nap; that could cover another couple of hours and looks like a great place to meet some assorted folks (bring a flask).
Hole in the wall eateries are hard to come by in midtown. The East Village on Avenue A & B and streets in between has somw goodies. As does rhe LES in the blocks just across Houston Street from there. And you'll find some good little places for eats tucked between boutiques of all sorts a bit farther west in NoLIta.
So you might try the New Museum of Contemporary Art (http://www.newmuseum.org/) on The Bowery at Prince. That way you're closer to shopping & eating opportunities in both NoLIta & the LES.
MoMA:
Pipilotti Rist's lush multimedia installations playfully and provocatively
merge fantasy and reality. MoMA commissioned the Swiss artist to create a
monumental site-specific installation that immerses the Museum's Marron Atrium
in twenty-five-foot-high moving images. Visitors will be able to experience
the work while walking through the space or sitting upon a sculptural
seating island designed by the artist.

Lofter thanks for the advise! I work in the LES so I was actually thinking of taking here there to show her my hotel and then maybe popping over to the New museum. Have you been there yet? I am interested and seeing how it is.
Those were great pictures! I am going to have to make it over to MOMA soon!

If she's a burger fan and wants to eat at a hole in the wall, take her to the Stoned Crow (6th Ave & Washington Place).

I would also suggest "Koren Alley" over by 32nd street and 6th (near path). They have some veggie dishes (I don't know if they are vegan) but they are definitely different than what most Americans have had (the appetizers for one are an experience and a half).
Although she does not like touristy things, I would still recommend the top of the rock. Cold weather USUALLY means clear air. It can also produce some interesting fog/smoke effects. Great for cityscapes (especially t sunset, which shoould be about 5pm tomorrow).
Getting SLIGHTLY out of midtown, walk by 2nd avenue and/or 9th avenue. they both have a lot of restaurants and stuff. Different sections will cater to different environments. 9th avenue has the village down low, ending around 8th street or so (I think). It gets a bit more residential and commercial, then starts making its way into Hells Kitchen which has some nice spots now.
2nd avenue, i don;t know for sure, but walking from Midtown down to Chinatown I have seen a few clusters of restaurants and shops....
Wear MANY layers, het earmuffs and maybe a turthe-fur collar. I think it is going to be windy, so you may look silly, but Ski-goggles might help a LOT! (I was thinking about that this morning!!!).
Have fun!

I believe there are a whole strip of them on 43rd street near 5th avenue as well.
All I can do is look at them and wonder how much juice these things are sucking.....

Thanks for all of the impute everyone!
She visited my hotel, then walked around Rockefeller center and a few other places, and had a Thanksgiving dinner at Korean place. The rest of the time she was here we shopped around 34th street and in SOHO, hung out with friends and ate ALOT. It was a really good time. ;)
