Sorry if this is in the wrong section, was just a general wonderment! Was browsing some apt listings/wanted ads etc last week, and there are pages and pages of new yorkers, offering a room in thier apartment, in exchange for very little rent and "housekeeping" I suppose you would call it. Quite a large number i saw were for perfectly decent apts, and the owners seemed happy to just let the tennant pay a small fee and do thier cooking/cleaning/laundry etc in payment! Is this common???!! I cant really believe it goes on, knowing how much owners can demand for precious ny spaces! But there seemed to be alot of them. Do you think these could be genuine?

Again, was just a thought,im not interested, knowing my luck i'd choose the loner who skipped bail to roomy up with x

This was fairly common in Norway as well, so I don't think this is particularly unique to New York...

Though do keep in mind that there are more than a few occasions the "housekeeping" duties will be expected not only in the kitchen but also the bedroom...

Ha! I was offered a job with free room and board to be a "personal assistant", all I had to do is wear a business suit with no pants the entire time and call him "master". Needless to say I had to pass the offer up :D
