You would have to save the down payment.

Too vague a statement.

It would depend on what you saved or invested, how the investments performed, and what your expenses were.

If you get a job as a cop, worked the 10 years or so to get to a higher (maybe not highest) pay scale, and possibly lived with your parents the whole time saving every spare dime, then yes, you probably could get a house.

But if you ae the opposite... well, I think you see where I am going with this.

Also, what's the need for a 2-3 bedroom house SOLO? So many singles seem to think they need to get their family home all on their own. Get something to fit yourself, then sell when you need to upgrade because of family/etc!

The NYPD isn't looking for maintainability or longevity in its employees- if you are looking for those things, you probably don't want to work for the NYPD. And if you're looking for a single family home, of all things, you definitely don't want to work for the NYPD.

If you don't have the down payment, you will have to rent until you have saved enough down payment to own.

Get an apartment. You're not buying a house in New York City on an NYPD salary- end of story.
