I been trying to avoid the subject, but it's already out there, all over talk radio.
Several weeks ago, I awoke to the sound of
http://scarletknights.com/football/pressbox/images/carlin.jpg
on WFAN, muttering something about the Giants going back to the Super Bowl. The very next week, they lost one of the easiest games on their schedule, to the crappy Cleveland Browns - their only loss.
So don't blame me if the jinx is in.

Yeah, it would be Chris Carlin to jinx something. The Giants look unbeatable right about now, and the Jets are playing extremely well. At 8-3, I think they won 5 straight. The Jets beat a previous undefeated Tenneesse Titans team, but I still think the Jets will fall a little short of the promise land. The Giants on the other hand should be undefeated, but that Monday night game to the Browns was a total hiccup. I think the Giants have what it takes to get back to the SB. They are the favorite to win the NFC. It would be a total let down if the Giants don't repeat as SB champs, imo.

The Giants are scary good right now, but as the Cleveland game shows they are capable of throwing up a stinker at any moment. Im just hoping that they are not shooting their proverbial load now.

NFL has plan if Giants, Jets reach title games
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/NFL-has-plan-if-Giants-Jets-reach-title-games?urn=nfl,124931
Per ESPN's SportsCenter, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told WFAN radio on Tuesday that, if the New York Jets (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyj/) and the New York Giants (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyg/) both host the championship games for their respective conferences, one game would be played on Sunday night, and the other game would be played on Monday night.
It makes senses; there's no way that both games could be played on the same day. And with two weeks until the Super Bowl, there's no real advantage or disadvantage to playing on Sunday or on Monday.
What also makes sense, frankly, is adopting this format regardless of whether both games will be played in the same venue. The league gradually has been nudging postseason games toward prime time; why not transform the AFC and NFC title games into a two-night extravaganza?
Our guess is that the league might be willing to put this possibility on the table when the time comes to renegotiate the broadcasting contracts.
Since the networks will be able to make more money via ad sales, they'd theoretically be willing to fork over more cash for the broader package.

Giants kicker Tynes hoping Bush will pardon jailed brother
New York Giants (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyg/) kicker Lawrence Tynes (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7022/) wants one more unlikely victory in this Super Bowl year — and he's hoping the Bush administration can make it happen, the New York Daily News reported. Tynes, the hero of the NFC title game, seeks a White House order freeing his jailed brother Mark, a convicted drug trafficker doing 27 years.
Lawrence Tynes acknowledges his older brother's guilt but believes the sentence is overly harsh.
"The situation that Mark found himself in was partly due to his own mistakes," says newly hired lawyer Robert Ortiz, point man for the effort. We have to make sure that what we submit is accurate and explains Mark's position and why we believe the sentence is excessive."
Ortiz, the finance chairman for the New Jersey Republican State Committee, donated $2,000 to President Bush's reelection campaign in 2004, public finance records show. And it can't hurt that Bush singled Lawrence Tynes out when he hosted the world champions on the White House lawn, citing the clutch kick to beat Green Bay and send the Giants to the Super Bowl.
"Lawrence Tynes, who's with us here, came through with a 47-yard field goal in overtime," Bush said. "You know, I knew you were going to make it."
Lawyers for his 31-year-old brother exhausted all their appeals, leaving the Justice Department's pardon attorney office as the last legal Hail Mary to free Mark Tynes. The pardon office helps the President sift through clemency applications. Mark Tynes hopes for an early release or a sentence reduction. Two factors are working against him: Bush has granted very few pardons or commutations.
"This President has virtually ignored this power," said Prof. Dan Kobil, a pardon process expert at Capital University Law School in Columbus. "He's by far the stingiest pardoner."

OK, so let's go over what transpired since my observation about a possible jinx.
The Jets were sailing along, winning five in a row, the fifth a convincing win on the road against previously undefeated Tennessee. That same week, the Denver Broncos get slapped around at home by the crappy Oakland Raiders. So the Broncos limp into the Meadowlands and beat the Jets easily.
The Giants continued to win, but lost one of their star players for the year (and beyond) by what can only be described as bizarre circumstances. An athlete involved in late-night shootings isn't exactly rare, but who ever heard of one shooting himself when his handgun slipped down the leg of his sweatpants. The Giants proved they are the best team in the NFL last night...when they play up to their capabilities. They looked atrocious in each of their three losses this season - so bad the Lions could have beat them on those given nights. As long as they play like they did last night in the playoffs, they will repeat as world champs.

Forget the Jags, they're getting thumped.
Your fortunes are riding on the Jets (harr). Jets just got a gift, bad snap on a punt by Miami. Jets took over deep, and scored TD. Now 17-14 Jets.
Favre doesn't look sharp.
As I type this, Miami flea-flicker for 44 yards to the Jets 36.

Jets Fire Mangini After Late-Season Collapse
By GREG BISHOP (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/b/greg_bishop/index.html?inline=nyt-per) and JOSHUA ROBINSON
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The Jets (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/sports/profootball/nationalfootballleague/newyorkjets/index.html?inline=nyt-org) have fired Coach Eric Mangini (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/m/eric_mangini/index.html?inline=nyt-per), hours after the team completed a late-season swoon and was eliminated from playoff contention with a loss at home to the Miami Dolphins (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/sports/profootball/nationalfootballleague/miamidolphins/index.html?inline=nyt-org). The team is expected to announce the firing at a morning news conference, said a member of the team who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the move before it was officially announced.
After three of the four seasons in his contract, Mangini, the youngest head coach in the N.F.L. (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/n/national_football_league/index.html?inline=nyt-org) at age 37, had a record of 23-26. And during the team’s 1-4 slide into ignominy at the end of this season, he made his share of decisions that were questioned. Now the precocious coach, who was sometimes called Mangenius, has been held accountable for failing to reach the postseason after the team acquired quarterback Brett Favre (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/f/brett_favre/index.html?inline=nyt-per) in the off-season.
The speculation surrounding his job security started before Sunday. In one news conference last week, Mangini was even asked whether the rumors prevented him from focusing on Christmas with his family. And in a radio interview on WFAN, the former Jets star Joe Klecko called for his firing.
“I think he’s lost them,” Klecko said, referring to the players. “I don’t think he’s done a good job with them.”
The one player whose performance was most scrutinized was Favre, the probable future Hall of Famer who jolted the league and energized the Jets’ franchise in August when he joined the team. His arrival compelled the Jets to release Chad Pennington (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/p/chad_pennington/index.html?inline=nyt-per), who went on to sign with the Dolphins, who were 1-15 last season. Pennington led the Dolphins to an 11-5 record and the American Football Conference East division title, one of the biggest turnarounds in league history. It culminated with the stinging victory over the Jets on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Favre performed poorly as the Jets collapsed late in the season, once again raising doubts that he would continue his career.
The NFL Network reported Sunday that there had been discussions within the organization last week about how to handle Mangini’s future. The Jets, the NFL Network reported, even considered offering Mangini a one-year extension — it is rare for a team to let a coach simply work through the last year of a contract without any plans beyond it — but it never came.
Mangini has been criticized for a lack of emotion in his coaching style, something that none of his players seemed to have a problem with. Fullback Tony Richardson said he had never seen Mangini show frustration. He does not storm around the practice fields, spew invective or flip over water coolers.
“What’s the point of throwing something?” Richardson said. “We’re talking about grown men and guys who are paid to do a job.”
It is a job that, on Sunday, Mangini seemed convinced would still be his next season. When asked whether he thought he would return, he responded crisply, “Yeah, I do,” his shortest answer of the news conference.
In the sagging locker room, the Jets’ players rallied behind Mangini.
“I don’t think he should shoulder a lot of the blame for the way this season has went,” wide receiver Laveranues Coles (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/c/laveranues_coles/index.html?inline=nyt-per) said. “Blame everybody.”
Nose tackle Kris Jenkins bristled when Mangini’s future became a question.
“I’ll never have anything bad to say about him,” he said. “You’ve got to understand this: This man has a position where, not only does he have to deal with the coaching staff, he has to deal with 53 egos every single day. He has to scout every single day. I don’t care what anybody says.’ ”
Mangini was groomed under Bill Parcells (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/p/bill_parcells/index.html?inline=nyt-per) and Bill Belichick (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/b/bill_belichick/index.html?inline=nyt-per). He was an assistant under Parcells with the Jets from 1997 to 1999, then spent six seasons with the New England Patriots (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/sports/profootball/nationalfootballleague/newenglandpatriots/index.html?inline=nyt-org).

Well, generally, his public demeanor.
But specifically to your question:
Unlike baseball (and even with that there's debate), a football team isn't as much affected by bringing in a boatload of stars. Usually, this works when you add a key missing component - like if you have a good running back, but no blocking fullback. Or a speedy wideout for a QB with a good arm.
Look what happened to Dallas. Man for man, the most talented team in the NFC.
Contrast that to the Giants. Their success this year, and what surprised pundits who predicted a collapse after the departure of Shockey and retirement of Strahan, was the play of the offensive line, names no one recognized in pre-season.
When Favre's play began to deteriorate in the latter part of the season, the Jets, still a good team, couldn't adjust to the situation and run more. When the Giants lost Burris for the season, they were able to adjust. The offensive line play has been so good, that even the 4th string running back was getting good yardage against a Viiking team that needed the win.
I thought I was wrong when the Jets were 8-3 and beat Tennessee, but when they first signed Favre, I thought it was an economic move. Both the Jets and Giants were selling expensive seats for the new stadium.
The Giants had a Super Bowl win as a marketing strategy. The Jets needed some excitement. Favre is popular, a hall of famer.
Jets ownership has already indicated it wants Favre to return. $$$

No, NOW the jinx is complete.....thanks for starting this stupid jinx of a thread Zip.:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Damn Eagles defense had the Giants offense all figured out today. Although it is easier to play defense when there is no competent wide reciever threat and you dont maximize your running game (WHERE THE HELL WAS BRADSHAW COACH!?!?!). Awful job of coaching by Coughlin.
Plaxico might have found a way into getting some forgiveness from the Giants hierarchy and thus back into the team.
