I am getting ready to visit my friends in the city this weekend for my birthday, but the only night they have off to go out is Monday. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any cools bars/clubs/lounges to check out??

Monday's and Wednesday's are the worst nights to go out in the City. A few places I've gone on a Monday night that had more than two people are Off The Wagon on Macdougal, Pianos on Ludlow, and Brother Jimmy's on Amsterdam. Its really hit or miss though. Your best bet is to find a place that has drink specials, karaoke, or some other kind of event.

It also depends on what you are looking for.

If you are going to a bar to party, then yes, Stern is right. Mondays and Wednesdays are the worst.

Bars deliberately offer specials on those days. One great restaurant in Hoboken, just across from the PATH (Teak) offers half price everything (including drinks) on Mondays, and a special at Black Bear (Again, Hoboken) offers 6 mini-burgers and a 22 oz sam adams (or seasonal) for $10. ($3 refills).

But that is Hoboken. NYC has its own places that offer similar.

Now, if you are looking for a small quiet place, or if you have neough friends to fill a place on your own, there are plenty of smaller places that would fit the bill. Kettle of Fish is a comfy basement-leisure room feeling place with dart boards and couches over in the West Village. And there are also places like double happiness over in Chinatown (Mott street I think). No sign for the place, just a couple of votive candles in an urn/pot down a flight of stairs.

Let us know what you are looking for (more specifically) and maybe we can help!
