Hello fellow New Yorkers,

I'm currently doing research for my PhD on sound and listening in the NYC subway system. I have created a survey here (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=_2bpatTAAtXDcNWb6XHVFAdg_3d_3d) that I would appreciate you taking, but I also wanted to ask about sound in the subway.

What sounds do you associate with the subway? Do some stations have distinct soundscapes? What about trains? When you take the train, can you tell where you are by listening?

Thanks for your answers!

The screaching sound I would associate with the subway most of all. This is most prominent at the 5th avenue station where the NRW makes a horribly loud screech as it turns south.

^^^ So true. That is the official noise of the subway, imo. That noise can be terrible when the 7 starts to become elevated in Queens.
