Hello everybody!

Myself and a friend are heading to NY on November 11th for 7 nights. We are coming from Ireland!

I have been before and know of a few of the usual tourist spots to visit so I can show him them but if you guys could recommend any other spots that would be fantastic!

Also, what kind of weather can be expected around that time of year?

As a couple of single guys we would definitely like to know where the good bars are etc to hopefully get talking to some nice girls!

Also, any recommendations for decent pizza and burger places too?

Thanks in advance

go have a burger at Corner Bistro in the Village -- be prepared to wait a little while, but it's worth it.

Jean-Luc Naret (chief of Michelin and a very well-fed man in general) mentioned 'Burger Joint' as the world's best burger. Haven't been to the place yet, but I can only assume this guy knows his business :)

Had lunch there yesterday actually. Are the burgers good? Absolutely. Is it a tad bit weird to have to wait for a table at a burger joint? Yeah, kinda.

I'm guessing it's a lot better on weekdays, but we had to wait for 15min to get a table, which really is a bit ridiculous.

Weekdays aren't much different at Burger Joint, unless you go at an off hour. Pretty much any of the good burger places in the city will be the same wait at prime times.

Pizza - Go to John's on Bleecker Street

Hamburgers - good burgers at the Riviera Cafe on 7th Ave at the corner of Christopher St & West 4th.

NOHO Star on Lafayette Street up from Houston has great burgers.

Ah I don't mind waiting 15 mins if the food is that good! Do they have a bar so you can have a drink while waiting?

^ Why not?

DublinDude, though they don't need the publicity, you can also give Shake Shack (http://www.shakeshacknyc.com/) a try. Their main location is right within Madison Square Park (open air) but they've also opened a new enclosed restaurant in the Upper West Side.

As for the weather, check this NY Times page (http://nytimes.com/weather) for the 5-day forecasts.

Hi guys, me again!

We are thinking of going to a Broadway show now too which sounds good! Also is it safe enough to go jogging/walking in Central park?

Would it be possible to get tickets to an ice hockey or basketball game?

NYC4Life

Central Park is very safe nowadays. It is one of the most police patrolled areas in NYC. Hockey and Basketball games should be no problem. The season for both sports has just begun.

Hi all, me again!

We will be staying on West End Av on the corner of 95th street. Is this really far from the action?

I mean would it be too far a walk to get to Empire State etc?

Hi, Yes its quite a way, but the best thing about New York is walking. We always set off early and walk everywhere. There's Bars on 35th st. to have a 'rest' before or after the ESB. Then you head back home via Bars on the way for toilet breaks! Jimmys Corner on 44th street just off Times Square is Fantastic. I print a map from Frommers web site and then mark on potential watering holes so you can work out some kind of route.
Getting down to Tribeca and Soho would take ages though so you may need the subway but if you're gonna be out all day walking is a great way of seeing everything.

Sounds good, It would be nice to walk it early morning then get some breakfast along the way!

November 9th, 2008, 01:17 PM
Yes. After a hearty New York breakfast, you need to walk around 2-3 miles to walk it off!! Big Portions!!

Recommend any good bars? Friendly with a youngish crowd?

We do most of our drinking in the afternoons/early evening, so can't give good nightlife tips.
Just sit at the bar. The bartenders are usually always friendly.
http://www.mrdennehys.com/ in Greenwich Village is our favourite, We stay down in Tribeca.
The Bartenders are fantastic, Good grub. Lots of Sports on T.V.
Jimmys Corner is a 'Dive' Bar just off Times Square. If you like Boxing, Its great.

Ny mag has loads of listings on their website.

If you haven't been there before, you could try McSorley's Old Ale House, perhaps during the day.
Perhaps it's not your style. But to make a comparison of sorts.

My favourite Dublin pub is O'Donoghues on Merrion Row.

Yes Mr.Dennehys have 3 or 4 T.V.s dotted around. They have Setanta and fox soccer channel so there's usually a game on.
Ive seen my team Spurs lose 3 times in there!
The Everton supporters club go in.
Don't forget the saturday 5.30 kick off UK time = 12.30 NY time
Saturday afternoons around Greenwich Village is lovely.

What time do you fly? tomorrow isnt it? So lucky. We are going again in May. 1st time in warmer weather. We usually go in Feb / March when its freezing. Have such a good time!
When you stand at the foot of the ESB outside the chemist over the road on 34th street, you can't see the top. Mind blowing.
The Flatiron is just down the road too.

Hi all,

Just to let you know that myself and my friend had a great time over there! Did the open top bus tour and froze our asses off!! Went to see the New York Rangers V Boston in Madison Square Garden. (GREAT GAME)

We also got to see the Late Show with David Letterman which was interesting to see how it was done!!

We drank ourselves silly in Lanigans (both of them), the Pig in Whistle, Terra Blues, and countless other places!!

We got lost in a subway station, got in but couldn't get out!! We were the only people in New York ever to be unable to get a taxi so we headed back to the bar!!

Great time!!

Thinking of going back for St Patricks Day if we can get a cheap enough Hotel. Probably somewhere in Queens! Woo Hoo!
