A friend of mine has been trying to find illustrations online of the NYC skyline, something that is immediately recognizable but not too detailed as she wants to use it to trace for a design. It doesn't have to be entirely accurate (i.e. landmarks being squished together) etc. Any help would be very well appreciated!

You will probably have to buy something.
I've looked too, and they all want to sell you something.
This is an interesting site, if only for the animation.

I hope someone comes up with something for you.

Try to find "Manhattan Unfurled" by Matteo Pericoli. It's an elegant package, housed in a stiff folder and including a seperate booklet,an introduction by Paul Goldberger,
In 1998 and '99 the author drew the entire shore of Manhattan, from Inwood Hill down the length of the Hudson, around The Battery and up The East and Harlem Rivers to where he began. He includes all the bridges (from below, like you were on a boat;the Triborough is especially clever and surprisingly accurate) parkways (like FDR) shoreside parks, etc, and even incorporates buildings under construction, replete with their cranes and steel skeletons.
The artwork is at times sketchy, detailed and whimsical, and while not architecturally correct it incorporates all the buildings that sit on the rivers, sometimes going inland a few blocks to establish a perspective or capture a landmark. The Financial District and Midtown are dense with buildings.
What makes the book so incredibly cool is the scope. The pages unfurl to make a five-foot long panorama. One side is The Hudson, the other The East River. It must have been a hell of an undertaking, drawing everything important about Manhattan from an offshore perspective.
It is also easily traceable.I'll bet your friend will find it the perfect medium to find and use a lot of New York's important buildings.
If you look closely you can even find The Intrepid...
A quick search on Amazon had copies available for $4.95...
