I am a 17 year old high school student that lives in the warmths of Atlanta, Georgia. I am heading to NYC for a 3 day excursion/college audition January 23-25th, 2009. I was wondering, what should I pack for a NYC Winter trip?

I want to be able to walk around the city and not be in complete agony, so any tips on how to keep a Georgia boy warm would be helpful.

Thank guys:)

A bit early to say I guess, could vary a good bit. Expect cold and some snow, so good boots and warm pants. Bring layers, so you can adjust a bit to the weather. A good, warm jacket probably also a safe bet :)

The average high and low for the city in January is around 39° / 28° F (4° / -3° C). Of course there will be fluctuations but the likelihood of you running into any extremes during your 3 days here is small.

Even Atlanta gets those temperatures in the winter (albeit less frequently) so I don't know why someone from Atlanta wouldn't know how to dress for winter weather.

A winter coat and maybe a hat and gloves usually gets me by the winter. This ain't no Siberia you know.

Haha. True, but I don't live in downtown, I live in the suburbs which means I'm not walking around outside for extended periods of time. Usually, it's just a short walk to or from the car.

I appreciate your responces though. I do understand that it is a bit early to tell, but Im trying to start looking for anything I'd need. I don't own gloves or scarves or boots or anything like that, so the earlier I can buy things, the better.

Don't need boots. Gloves and scarfs are sold here on the streets very cheaply (a few dollars) so if you do need them, just buy from the street vendors.

In other words, unless you already have these, I wouldn't specifically go out and buy them before coming. I'd come here without them and then if you feel you need them, then you can always buy them here. It'll also save you from having to pack too much stuff unnecessarily.

Or it might turn out to be mild during your three days here and all this will be moot.

Ask Santa for silk thermals. They're lightweight and scrunch into nothing so they're great to pack, and you can wear the top by itself as a shirt. They come in colors. Santa might also give you a pair of cashmere lined leather gloves, and some wool socks. :)

The weather varies. It could range from a blizzard to 72º F and sunny. Check the forecast before you leave and pack accordingly.

an absolute must if you walk around to and from work, home or the train station is one of those heard warmers that go arounf your neck and cover your face...although you may not look the coolest during those extremely cold days in january and february this is a must to ensure your head doesn't freeze and fall off.... the wind whipping of the water through the buildings can be brutal...

Things I found most handy:

Gloves. A good pair of thinsulate gloves helps a lot. But pockets also work! ;)

Chap Stik/Lip Balm. Comes in VERY handy if you are out a lot.

Ear Muff/180's. I have a pair of 180's. Very warm and they do not muss your hair.

Turtle Fur Collar. This is a must if it is COLD. Retaltively snall, tuck it into, or over the collar of your jacket. Use the 180's to "anchor" it. Mush smaller and warmer than a scarf, I think.

And layers. The best thermals are always the ones like silk or breathable. As much as stache says you can wear the silk as a shirt, most look a bit, um, "stylin" and may not fit with the crowd you will visit or hang with.

OTOH, they might, all depends on your groove.

But yes, it is good to have layers. Boots are not essential, but a pair of Iimberland or similar waterproof shoes might be handy (especially if there is snow). If there is snow, get boots. Plain and simple.

The only other thing that might need protection are your eyes, but that depends on where you are. On a windy day in one of the concrete canyons of Wall Street, you will find it hard to move around without squinting/turning away. But if the winds are calm, then you really do not need protection.

A pair of sunglases might help though!

Like they said, it is not much worse than the worst days that Georgia has seen, the warmpth just does not last quite as long as it does in GA!

If you look you can find silk thermal shirts in a waffle weave, if you're more the granola type.

Haha. I completely understand. I have an asian here at home that I would love to bring with me :D

But I really appreciate everything that you guys are telling me. I really want to be able to enjoy myself, and not worry about the cold or weather. If I take the advice I've gotten so far, it seems as though I should be fine!

Hi. I'm brand new to this forum but I have been lurking here for sometime reading about the projects and highrises going up in NYC and London.

Just a quick question though, in regards to the winter weather - how cold is NYC during January (mid-late)? Is it blistering cold, as in it has snow, or is the weather manageable? I'm thinking of going to NYC at this time after the new year celebrations are over as I notice alot of Hotels offer cheap rates during this period than any other over the following seven months (at least the ones I wish to stay in, total being about £1k including return flight and insurance, and this is not a hostel!).

Thanks

In a nut shell the last couple we have very mild winters. December has had some mild weather as of late, nothing that terrible weather. If the last two weeks of the year just be prepared. January thru mid March can be brutal with the worst coming in mid January until the end of February.
So if your coming mid to the end be prepared but like I said don't expect that much snow.

Luke, umm can I ask what your last name is haha. My name is alex, i'm a girl, 17, I recently moved from Buckhead(atl,ga), and now live in NY. The city today was really chilly. Go to Brooks Brothers, get a good coat or sports jacket, no boots for college interviews. Where are you applying anyways? haha this is kinda crazy, but yeah you'll be fine with the normal "winter wear" for Ga in the winter just add another sweater or something. I miss waffle house and chik-fil-a soooo bad! There are none here, but plenty of other delicious things to eat.

-alex

p.s. don't ask how i found this forum haha. & what high school do you go to? I went to CKS and Marist.

I actually live about an hour west of Atlanta, about 20 minutes south of Rome. And yes, Wafflehouse and Chik-fil-a are great, but as you said, you have devine food at your fingertips.

How's the weather shaping up like? Now that it's actually getting cooler..
