I just moved to NY last Sunday, I finally found an apartment in Bushwick Brooklyn after sleeping on a couch for the last week. The apartment is brand new and really nice. The neighborhood is very industrial and kind of in the hood. Does anyone have any tips for me regarding the area?

The neighborhood is very industrial and kind of in the hood - you said it. So, be careful when you walk home late at night. Personally, I would not want to live in such an area even for free. I would rather live in a very small but safe place in a better neighborhood.

In the meantime, make yourself home in the "hood." Try to fit in with the surroundings so you won't seem like an outsider.

Well the lease is month to month, that way if I dont like it I can move. Once I have a job and have my feet on the ground here, I can look for some thing else.

You should probably start off by ceasing to call your own neighborhood "The Hood." You live there, now make yourself at home.

At home I am indeed. I am really starting to get used to the neighborhood now, its not as bad as I first thought. I think it was more of a culture shock for me, coming from my nice little neighborhood in Jacksonville, FL. ;)

Well, good luck, the city life you might like. Ive lived in Chicago all my life, all the advice I can give to you if you are living in an area like that is, don't act like you don't belong, and don't leave your door unlocked, and stay with your clothes when you do a wash, and do at daytime, and dont go out to 7 eleven for a coke at 1 am.
All usefull tips, I lived on broadway and ridge for about 9 years here in chicago, not the pretiest place in the city. I am sure NYC is awesome too, I want to try it out someday.
