So, can anyone give me some ideas on where I can find classic, American diners downtown, say Canal street and down? Found Gee Whiz so far which is good, but I think they're starting to get sick of me, they have even started bringing me my juice before I order...

near you, try the Square Diner on West Broadway and Leonard. The fries are famously very variable.

if you're willing to travel, you can't beat Veselka in the East Village. It's not "American" but it is in many ways a diner -- 24 hours, packed, always ready with the coffee -- and it is yum!

If the food is all right, I don't see why you need to go anywhere else unless of course you're tired of the same food and want something different.

I don't think they are sick of you. The more you go, the more business they get so they should be happy to see you. ;)

Great diner on Greenwich Street, south of Chambers and north of Warren Street (across from Whole Foods),

BrooklynRider, what restaurant/diner did we eat at when I was in New York before we saw The Dark Knight downtown. It was very close to Whole Foods because I remember walking in to see the new store before you got there.

Or....is that what you're talking about? :p

Yeah, that's the Gee Whiz I mentioned in the first post, they got great food, but I'm starting to feel silly for coming in there so often:)

Try www.menupages.com (http://www.menupages.com)

I have found it indispensible for my (all too few) visits to NYC.

We went to Bubby's on our last visit. It's in Tribeca.

Didn't know there was one in TriBeCa. I've been to the one in Downtown Brooklyn. Good to know! Thanks.

Lol. I don't know about the Tribeca one, but if you're willing to travel across the bridge, the Brooklyn Bubby's has an excellent view of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan. :)
