Good set of pics, alonzo ...

Love the 2nd one -- back when BPC was still but a beach :)

Any specific reason you chose to go with the British spelling of "CENTER" in the thread title?

Alonzo-ny

I refuse to spell things americanily, unless its an official document, mainly because I am British, Im still pissed about that little revolution you guys had a few years back.

Great set of photographs Alonzo. Thank you for posting them.

My greatest New York regret is that I never got to visit and see the towers, or ride to the observation deck for those superb views.

Still. What happened to them inspired my respect and fondness for New York and New Yorkers.

^ Well, now that you've learned your lesson, just be sure to come back here to go up the Freedom Tower when it's completed in 2013 (or whenever it'll be push back to ).

There'll be an observation deck up there at just about the same height as the one in the South tower.

Well I will be 71 this year.

Do you think they can speed it up a bit so I don't run out of time?

:):):):)

Don't worry, you'll make it, with lots of time left over. ;)

But thanks. I admire your confidence.

I like these pictures, Im maybe what could be called a World Trade Center Fan. Once I saw the Manhattan Skyline with the World Trade Center from a plane but I was 6 years old and it was 2000 and didnt take a picture (I wish I did). I enjoy the old one where Battery Park City looks like a beach.

Very Nice Pics! Shame i never got to see the tower IRL. :(

as mentioned, the whole 9/11 incident has given me more respect for both the city and the people living there.

Great pics Alonzo.

To think that the towers were once this close to the Hudson...

The contrasts in this picture are amazing. Cover up the right half of the picture and this could just as well been taken from a field in Nebraska.

One of those very rare angles. I appreciate it much. :D

How was WTC so close to the Hudson in that one shot? Was the land that BPC sits on not there?

The Benniest
May 19th, 2008, 02:22 PM
I agree. It does seem quite close in both the ariel shot and the side shot of the towers.

NYatKNIGHT
May 19th, 2008, 03:26 PM
The rock and earth excavated from the original WTC bathtub was the fill used to create BPC.

antinimby
May 19th, 2008, 10:49 PM
All the dirt from the 16-acre WTC pit couldn't possibly fill up all 90+ acres of BPC, could it?

There must have been dirt from some place else added in or the Hudson along the edges of Lower Manhattan just wasn't very deep at all.

Alonzo-ny
May 19th, 2008, 11:03 PM
I was thinking that myself. I know they used WTC dirt but not for the whole of BPC.

brianac

Battery Park City is a 92 acre (0.4 km²) planned community (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_community) at the southwestern tip of lower Manhattan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_Manhattan) in New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City), United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States). The land upon which it stands was created from the Hudson River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson_River) using 1.2 million cubic yards (917,000 m³) of dirt and rocks excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trade_Center) and certain other construction projects, as well as from sand dredged from New York Harbor off Staten Island.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_Park_City,_Manhattan#cite_note-0) The neighborhood, which is the site of the World Financial Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Financial_Center) along with numerous housing, commercial and retail buildings, is named for adjacent Battery Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_Park_%28New_York%29).

The point is, BPC was not there until they began construction of the World Trade Center - to answer his question.

Original 1 and 2 WTC (ca. 1977 -- U.S. Steel and Bankers Trust Buildings completed; adjacent
segment of West Side Highway still standing; and no structures visible atop BPC landfill)

Because I never had the chance to see or visit the WTC, I like this video, because it is one of the few I have seen that gives you a look at the area between the towers and a brief look at the other WTC buildings.
Plus, it shows the magnificent views I was never able to see.

The one with the tombstones is especially poignant. The sea of slabs reminds me of the Manhattan skyline; every tomb represents a life just like every building represents a concept, an idea.
