In some ways it was a better city then.
(Could have used a bit less litter, though.)

Less processed/fast food.
No computers.
Real sports, not virtual games.
More an industrial economy.

Rather than start a new thread, I'll put these color pics of 1960's NYC right here. Not Cushman quality clear, but better interesting nonetheless.

Most are probably very early 60's; a few may even be late 50's. These are from a 1966 book I dug out of the attic. BTW, I do better job dating photos by cars than haircuts;)

thanks so much for posting these. i have that book by lehnartz as i collect old photography books that focus on nyc in the 50's and 60's. unfortunately, unlike punzie, i'm not too old to remember any of these. the city was definitely much dirtier...no comparison to what it's like today..but it also was a much better place to live. maybe it's just because i was a kid back then and that will always be true of any place you grew up.
mind if i post some other old pictures of the city back then on this thread? i can start a new one if you'd rather.

Wow, I forgot how defining 30 Rock used to be from the Hudson River. Manhattan seems so much narrower before all of the office space west of 6th Avenue was built up. You can even see 570 Lexington -- all the way over on Lexington Avenue -- in all its glory from the West side. What a different skyline.

I think the Midtown skyline is more attractive now than it's been in the past...of course taking a closer look at the individual buildings is another story.

The towers of the 60's and 70's took the softness out of the skyline but I find them a a necessary evil.

Brick & Limestone rule.
All Glass = Dastardly Interloper.
I think that's a bit unfair. I think the worst post-war buildings in the city are brick.
The urban renewal projects and almost all post-war residential buildings up until the last few years are brick. Of course they are not as noticeable in the skyline as the taller glass office towers, but I think they have been even more damaging to the city's streetscape.
Bottom line architecture is the problem- not style.
If modern buildings could be built under the same conditions and budgets as the ones 20's, I have no doubt that they'd be just as amazing.

Fairness really has nothing to do with it ;) -- it's just how I see it.
In my mind's eye the perfect version of NYC is mainly stone and brick -- but, of course, those must be well done and with lots of windows.
Add an amazing glass tower or nine -- scattered here & there, gathered in a cluster -- for variety.
Banal buildings at 30 + stories -- no matter the material -- are never welcome.
I'm just not a fan of all glass Hong Kong / Houston / Dubai style skylines. Call me old fashioned, but a skyline with all glass rising tall seems brash and without long-term-edness. On the other hand, lately London seems to be getting the mix just about right -- and she has the balls to build big + crazy with glass and steel. I like what i see there.
So maybe I'm not so old-fashioned after all

We received these amazing old panoramic photos in our inbox yesterday (courtesy Forgotten-NY (http://www.forgotten-ny.com/)), taken by Patrick Cullinan in the '60s. The spot? Patrick writes: "In June of 1962, I went to the Williamsburg Bank Building and asked 'the guy' if I could go upstairs and take some pictures. He said OK. I think he escorted me. The whole thing was conducted in a relaxed atmosphere"... as opposed to today, when you have to sneak in (http://gothamist.com/2009/04/23/williamsburgh_savings_bank.php). Enjoy the nearly half century journey back in time!

The first photo looks north, with Brooklyn Tech and Fort Greene Park visible on the right and the Empire State building straight ahead. In the second one you can see Lafayette Avenue cutting east up the hill to the Masonic Temple. Pretty great!

When I searched for images of Brooklyn street scenes from 1969, I found the black and white image of a street and elevated train that was posted on your forum page. Who would I need to contact for permission to use this picture either for a website to promote a book or as the cover of the book itself? It is a novel set in Brooklyn in 1969, and it is called SEEING THINGS IN BROOKLYN.

I loved all the photos on your post. There was one in particular from your post of Jan. 31, 2009, in which I was interested-- Brooklyn Scene 1969 (William Gedner). Who would I need to contact for permission to use this photo either on a website to promote a book I wrote or as the cover of the book itself? It is a novel called SEEING THINGS IN BROOKLYN, which is set in 1969.

Doing a Google search (http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=%22William+Gedner%22&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8) for "William Gedner" hardly anything popped up. There was THIS ONE (http://www.nytimes.com/1865/05/17/news/city-government-board-councilmen-petitions-resolutions-motions-reports-message.html?pagewanted=5), but it's from 1865 and lists Mr. Gedner as one on a list of "blind persons" who were to receive a donation from the City Comptroller.
There is, however, a photographer by the name of William GEDNEY (http://photo.box.sk/history.php3?id=16):
William Gedney moved to Brooklyn as a nineteen year-old to attend the Pratt Institute of Art. He graduated from Pratt in 1955, but continued to live in Brooklyn for more than twenty years, first in a cold-water flat on Myrtle Avenue and later, in 1974, moving to the basement apartment of a brownstone owned by his closest friends from art school, Arnold and Anita Lobel. New York was one of Gedney's favorite subjects, and over the years, he photographed parades, revivals, holiday shoppers, automobile shows, Washington Market, Times Square, Coney Island, and the Brooklyn Bridge. There was one particular bar in Brooklyn, O'Rourke's, that he visited, wrote about, and photographed often in the early 1960s. In 1969, William Gedney compiled two notebooks devoted exclusively to Myrtle Avenue, the street on which he lived. That year he also began a series of photographs from his apartment window, his view of the commerce of life under the elevated train. One of the last series Gedney undertook was to photograph the yearly parade commemorating the 1969 Stonewall riots.
His collection is held at Duke University:

lofter1
December 7th, 2010, 01:32 AM
As much as I'd love to tell you otherwise, the interior seen above has no relation to the old cast iron building. That one is the grand Haughwout Building at 490 Broadway (Broome).
When I first moved down this way she was still that great old gnarly black, all peeling and decrepit, like something out of Dickens. Around 1990 she was given more than just a bath, she got a whole paint job. She's since been re-painted that tannish-beige color; she's now a much more appropriate grey (although a darker shade would be better). The water tower is still up top.
Here's how she looked about a year ago (http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2009/12/29/restored_soho_gem_unwraps_itself_for_the_holidays. php), when the latest exterior restoration was nearly complete.
Up until a couple of months ago she still had one of the oldest elevators in town (http://www.elevatorpreservation.com/2010/03/haughwout-building-otis-elevator-or-a-b-see/). Otis installed the very first passenger elevator ever here back in 1857, but it was upgraded in the 1890s. The old wood and wrought iron cage could be seen just inside the doorway along Broadway. The northernmost bay held a freight elevator that opened onto the street. Lately that whole area has been covered in plywood while renovations take place. I fear they're taking out the old stuff and giving it all an upgrade:

Cast iron?!? That's an architectural first for me. That top color wouldn't have been so bad if not for the peeling paint & the dirty (painted?) windows. This new gray reminds me of a garage floor. I've only seen one outside entrance to an elevator, in New Brunswick. This is the second. Hopefully they can keep it vintage with new mechanisms. Had no idea this was Otis' first. What is the street address of that 60s mod apartment?

That was unnecessary. Unless they're planning to shut that elevator down. Wouldn't make sense. Maybe they'll save the elevator piece for somewhere inside the building, but again, wishful thinking.

Video: Old Greenwich Village, Just Like The Suburbs!
by Jen Carlson
Want to take a journey back in time to when Greenwich Village was just like Greenwich, Connecticut meets a modern bohemian Casbah? Then watch this vintage video, where the narrator explains that the neighborhood "is the postmark for many countrified cosmopolitans, people who prefer small town casualness to rigid metropolitan dress... Village life is cosmopolitan, yet relaxed, care-free. Pleasure is found in just being alive.
Suburban living, on an urban landscape." Also: sidewalk cafes, free from conservatives! We don't want to give any spoilers, but be sure to stick around for (drum roll, please) the paradoxes and contradictions that nightfall brings.

I never realized that NYC had barely any black folks in the '60s  (at least none worth mentioning, according to this vid)

Some more old 60's color slides and photos. Unable to credit as I'm unsure where they originally came from.
