Hi everyone. My name is Don
I was born in the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in 1949. Was raised on Franklin Ave and President St. In the Shadow of Ebbets Field. Went to St Teresa of Avilla, then PS 241, Lefferts Jr HS, Erasmus Hall HS.

Now retired from AT&T and living in Weaverville, North Carolina. In the moutains.

I met my wife Susan from Greenpoint when she was born. I was having my tonsils taken out and she was born on the same floor of the BJH.
For many years while my father drove through Brooklyn over the Kos Bridge into Queens. I saw this little girl in her backyard in her swimming pool. Then we finally met eye to eye on her first day at AT&T. A match made in heaven.

Greetings all,

Lived here since I was 2, grew up in the Bronx, now living in Queens, heading back to school after a misspent youth.

I'm a pretty regular guy, just trying to make my way in the world, painting to keep me sane, etc. Seeking additional distractions as well, it's too easy to get so wrapped up in your own schedule that before you know it 6 months has passed and you've hardly gone out!

I have just read all 16 pages of this thread, and there are many humorous postings. The funniest part was the series of postings that ALBARC had with one scatty English member. The postings began quite normally on 7th May 2006 but after a series of postings and replies, this members last posting on 8th June 2006 was, "Where have all my friends gone"?

You did your best ablarc.

Age: 20
Gender: F
Misc: I joined the Marine Corps straight out of high school. I work about 60 hours a week and going to uni full time majoring in management/marketing. My plans are to get out in two years to attend NYU for my masters in business (which I originally got into for my bachelors but had no money to attend an out of state college - or in state for that matter) Needless to say, I think joining the military was not one of my wisest choices.

July 11. It's brutal, all the stuff you have to go through to get over there. Today, we had a seminar of the sorts going through great lengths the history/communities/wildlife/etc of Iraq. Trust me, it was quite a snoozer. Not to mention I had to get my second anthrax shot in front of a hundred or so people. I was pretty nervous since I passed out on the first one and missed the "excruciating" burning sensation you apparently get, but oh how I felt it this time. Only one more shot and then the small pox month of hell. I definitely diminish the "strong" characteristic most Marines get.

I will definitely post about my time over there (8 months). I'll dedicate a thread to it, updating it with pictures and anything interesting. (I will have internet so I can still go to uni).

Hello all, as you can see from my info, my name is Tommie from NC. I hate it here. Actually, hate is a strong word...and since I dont know a stronger one I will leave it at that.

I have never been to NYC, besides virtual tours via the wonderful pictures on WiredNY and the descriptions of the people, sounds, sights, etc. Im planning to take a visit soon with my girlfriend and cant wait to see it all for myself.

Even though I have never been to the big apple, something about it draws me in and now I am officially consumed with wanting to live and start my career there. If I cannot live in NYC, Ill at least be visiting once a year, hence my signing up to wiredny.

I really enjoy looking at the pictures, and reading about whats happening around the city. Anyways, see you folks around the forum.

My hometown isn't all that interesting. I absolutely loathe it. It would, however, be my honor to present you with a fabulous photo tour of Boston shortly after my arrival there.

Although I will be living in Beantown, New York City does await me in the future. Like I said in my member introduction, I want to move to NYC so bad but I just can't afford it right now. I'll be commuting to New York for business frequently (not everyday), though, and will live there eventually. Maybe next year.

That's not to say I don't appreciate Boston. They're the only two US cities I could see myself living in.

There are a lot of stories about how NY got the nickname Big Apple.

It was popularized in the 1930s by jazz musicians, who referred to a gig in NY as the Big Apple.

In the 1920s, a reporter named John Fitzgerald wrote a horseracing column for the New York Morning Telegraph called "Around the Big Apple." In 1924, FitzGerald wrote that he first heard the term used by stable hands in New Orleans. The goal of horse trainers and jockeys was to race at the NY tracks - the Big Apple.

NY govt now accepts this version as official. The corner of W 54th St & Broadway, FitzGerald's home for 30 years, is called "Big Apple Corner."

Forward this message to your cat, as she seems to be in complete control of your life. I get this question a lot in my profession and I always answered by saying " I don't exactly know but I think because everyone wants to take a bite out of NY"..:)) It is good to find out the real reason. Thanks Zippy.:)))

Thanks to the kind folks at Uniwatch, I've found my way here. I am still relatively new to the WNY forum, so allow me to introduce myself. I am a mid-career academic, born and raised on the Jersey side of the NY metro area, who has spent that past twenty-some years (1983-present) living in Japan, Taiwan, and the UK. I was last in the US for some graduate work in 1995-1996. I currently live and teach in Taiwan.

I am active in human rights issues and have worked as a volunteer for Amnesty International as well as the Message and Tracing unit of the British Red Cross. I don't have any real hobbies to speak of, although I like to go bird-watching with friends and experts who know what they are doing -- time allowing. We have 1.5 dogs (two strays; one has been a "guest" for over a year now) and three cats. I am a NY Yankee fanatic, and have been since Thurman Munson's Rookie of the Year season (1970).

I consider myself a historian, but have come to the field late in my career. My degree specialty is travel literature.

I have never participated in a moderated discussion such as we have here at WNY. I discovered this forum while daydreaming about the possibility of spending some months (or a whole year!) in NY while on research leave (perhaps 2011). If you have any criticism of my posts, please let me know via this thread or PM. I hate internet squabbles, but can take criticism.

Didn't know you could get a degree in that. Years ago I edited a guidebook to Europe. Back then, people did things like hitchhike.

Hello all... I'm Jon, been living in Manhattan for the last 13 years now. Some things I love about the city include real estate (architecture, building histories, etc), nightlife (late night on Avenue A), and the fact that it doesn't smell as bad in the winter time.

Part of the year I spend in Shanghai. That's only funny because a few years ago I moved from the East Village to Chinatown. It's like I can't escape it - I'm "The American" whether I'm in China or at home. :)

Besides that, I created a site about the city recently, New York Newb (http://www.newyorknewb.com). It's still in the getting started stage but I wanted to create something I would use for myself all the time. Feel free to check it out.

Anyways, nice to be here. I've been working in real estate management for awhile now so if you have building management questions, don't mind asking.

Hello y'all !!
My name's Juan Pedro and I have been enjoying the forum as a visitor for some time so that I decided to register.
I'm writing from the south east of Spain, from Fuente Alamo, a village close to Cartagena ( between Benidorm & Mojacar ), of course a village with no highrises, maybe that is the reason why I always was attracted to skyscrapers and why ( despite my wife ) I have at home a big pic of Empire under construction.
Congratulations for your beautiful city and its incredible atmosphere.
For many ppl like me it has been ( concerning urban planning & skyscrapers ) like a reason to became a pilgrim on the look out of highrises.

Well, once again congratulations for your beautiful city!

Also, I'd like to practice and learn some English (or at least, improve it).

See ya!

Hi everyone!! It's great to be here! I'm Samantha, 23, from York PA. I get out to NYC as often as possible because let's be honest...it's the greatest city in the world! I'm a photographer on the side so taking pics of the city is a huge hobby of mine. So excited to be here and can't wait to join in on the chats!! :)

Hey, I'm Alexander 21 years old. I found this forum while searching for information about some building by Harde & Short a long time ago. I love NYC, its history and especially its architecure. For me everything started from Central Park and enchantment by Bethesda Terrace and its picturesque beauty :)
