After looking through some of the photos posted here I have to say that your city reminds me so much of Liverpool. the architecture is pretty much the same. although N.Y. is much larger of course.
Fab cities both.

New York is much much bigger but Manhattan is Bootle to Speke and as far back as The Jolly Miller. The comparisons dont just stop with the buildings but the general layout are where you expect them to be with both being built around our ports and docklands.
History dictates how a city grows buildings are mere beacons pointing the way.
I walk Birkenhead Park once a week so much has Central Park been modelled both beautiful.

And fingers crossed, we too could have a few nice shiny skyscrapers in the next few years.
Could do with having a better JLA-JFK service though. The globespan one was handled extremely badly.

I've been to Liverpool a few times and to NYC a couple of times and believe me any similarities are very few and far between. If you are trying to show Liverpool at all I would choose a different link, this one shows Liverpool consisting of 3 buildings and 6 pubs.

I chose that page because it had other links to more photos http://www.sjsfiles.btinternet.co.uk/photo.htm
Try this one. I know Liverpool is smaller but what I was trying to get at is the architecture is similar although not on NY scale. The layout of the streets in the only city in England that has a grid system.

Those are much better.
You may want to try to see The Cathedral Church of St John the Divine.
This is listed as the largest cathederal in the world and I believe Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral is the only one that is similar in size.

Yes they are very similar
The Bells in Liverpool Cathedral have the highest and heaviest peal in the world (219ft and 31 tons). The organ is probs the largest operational organ in the world it has 9765 pipes!
Interestingly, both Cathedrals have had their fair share of problems. St John the Divine had a fire, I believe, which halted the build and Liverpool Anglican was bombed during WW2.
Both structures were built by Gothic standards and no iron girders were used just stone and limestone. . .both amazing structures when you think of the time both took to build I think Liverpool was only finished in the 60's or 70's.

Some interesting buildings of Liverpool
St Nicholas is the parish Church of Liverpool built in 1356, although it has been added too over the centuries.
The University building is red sandstone, not used now as a learning centre the University faculites are spread over the city.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (we know it as Paddy's wigwam) was built on ground that used to be the Liverpool Workhouse on Brownlow Hill. Infamous place! If your interested here is a good link to the history of the Liverpool Workhouse.http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Liverpool/Liverpool.shtml
The Chinese Arch is a fantastic sight esp on Chinese New Year. The first pic shows the Art Gallery and the Central Library

Elaine I think you'll have to have a re think when talking about the largest/biggest. Remember you talking about New York.
Riverside Church Upper West Side New Manhattan has a Carillon of 74 bells weighing a total of a 100 tons and has a range of over 5 octaves.
The organ at Riverside Church has a total of 12,406 pipes but it is nowhere near the largest.
By the way the Tower at Riverside Church is 392ft tall.

I was only quoting the Cathedral website, so if they got it wrong then its not my fault, Maybe they should update their website:confused:

I got the info from this webpage, not the offical Cathedral website but its still a reputable site, I think

Wikipdia is OK but it is created by anyone and can be edited by anyone.
Any way enough of this biggest stuff. You just enjoy your visit to NY.

Didn't know that.
Nice pics of the John Lennon memorial. I am going to N.Y. week after next and will be visiting the Dakota Building and Strawberry fields (it really should be Strawberry field) no pluralisation, as in the original Strawberry field in Liverpool:)

There is an argument still raging over wether John says Strawberry Fields or Field. Would love to get my hands on the original transcript of his work. Then we would know for sure. . . Thanks mate will do I can't wait. . . and anyway what does it matter who's got the biggest and the best. . .it's the pride of your home that matters eh? and seeing new places and interesting people.

The Liverpool Waterfront has been copied by a number of cities around the world:
Royal Liver Building

from wiki:
The building remains the head office for the Royal Liver Friendly Society. It is reputed to be the gothic inspiration for both the Manhattan Municipal Building in New York and the Seven Sisters in Moscow.
Manhattan Municipal Building, New York

Enormously influential in the civic construction of other American cities, its application of Beaux-Arts architecture served as the prototype for the Terminal Tower in Cleveland, the Fisher Building in Detroit, and the Wrigley Building in Chicago.

Central Park
Birkenhead Park (1 mile from Liverpool) on Merseyside , designed in 1847 and believed to be the world's first public park, will get £6.6m to restore it to its former Victorian glory.
