I was in the Village on Monday and took some photos. In my opinion the most desireable place to live in the US, if not the world. Click the link to enlarge.

I overheard the tour guide state that the narrow home just to the left of the fire box was once owned by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Interesting. I wasn't on the tour, just waiting for them to get out of the way so I could snap the picture. Now I'm going to have to go on one.

I'm currently holed up in a JC loft with no high speed access. Once I get home in a few days I'll post a few more. I can't deal with dial-up anymore....it's not good for my mental health/stress level.

BTW, I don't think I have any of the Jefferson Market, though I'll have to check my hard drive.

How did the hideous design of this police precinct ever get approved?


It's a generic police station house design that's seen elsewhere in the City and, in this instance, probably wasn't subject to landmark review. The 1969 Greenwich Village Historic District Designation Report by the newly-created LPC, which preceded designation of the Historic District, says of the site of this thing:
"On this large lot, foundations have been laid for a new building extending through the block to No. 104 Charles Street. The Village Garage, built in 1918, recently stood here, and in the mid-Nineteenth Century, a screwbolt manufactory was located on this site."

You can see those all over the place, mainly in residential neighborhoods on side streets. It's exactly what it says it is - a drinking water sampling station. The City's Dept of Environmental Protection reports on drinking water quality every year (and monitors throughout the year).

The old West Village police station house is still there. Located on the north side of Charles St. between Greenwich and Washington Sts., it was converted to apartments in the late 1970s and cloyingly named "Le Gendarme."
