I visited on a rainy morning in June at about 11.00am and just walked straight in. Getting a ticket and riding to the top took about 10 minutes.

Sorry I missed the bit about evening, can't help you there I'm afraid.

Remember to look up when riding the elevator.

If you buy your ticket online, you will be given a 15 minute time-slot for your entry.
Once at the top, you can stay as long as you like (well, until closing).

Queues: There were hardly any when I was there in September.
Less crowded than the Empire State.

Make sure you get to the top just before sunset - best of both worlds, seeing theose views in daylight and when the lights of Manhattan come up.

Not so sure Advance Purchase is necessary / desirable ...

I have been up to the Top 3 times -- always on the spur of the moment or with little advance planning -- and have NEVER encountgerd any line at the ticket buying area. Have always been able to go up to the top within 10 minutes of arrival.

Is the Combo ticket (with MoMA) available when purchasing in person?
