There is a very fine article in the NYTimes about the Rockefeller Apartments... a 1930's apartment house across from the MOMA.

There is a must-see slide show as well. Of course you must be logged in to the NYT.
In the poll about our favourite neighborhoods in NYC, I chose the UES with Midtown as my second choice. For Midtown, I was specifically thinking about the Rockefeller Apartments (and the Osborne on 57th).

The wonderful Rockefeller Apartments is featured in a photo series of a marvelous stretch of West 54th Street, dubbed Rockefeller Canyon by the NYO:

I was surprised that the interior of the apartments seemed quite dark and oppressively closed in, perhaps due to the low ceilings and narrow rooms. The exterior, however, is gorgeous...except...
...the ubiquitous ugly air con unit strikes again:

Some residents of the Rockefeller Apartments are among the loudest of the anti-Tower Verre crowd, seeing as how the 1,000' + tower is planned for across the street.
If you think those RA units seem dark now just wait a few years

I remember an article in the Times about this building and they were saying how cheap these apts. were in the '70's (like 60K).

I find it odd that some units have wall-thru a/c whereas some have window a/c. Apparently it's up to the owner to decide whether to spend the dough on the change. Getting rid of the window a/c would bring in more light but you lose a smidget of floor area, which could be significant if the unit is a studio.

It's a Landmarked building, so all the through-wall AC units are undoubtedly from before the 1984 LPC designation.
