Hi All,
I hope everyone is well and had a good weekend.
My partner and I are traveling to NYC for 4 days in May. We are considering taking a trip to Woodbury Common Outlet. Has anybody been there before? Is it worth going? I know it will take pretty much the whole day, how does it compare to shopping in Manhattan.
I would be looking to buy casual wear, possible some designer names. My G/friend, well she will be trying to buy EVERTYTHING!!

I would never go back to that place. I only went because I drive by frequently, but it was among the more unpleasant retail experiences I've had. There are outlet malls everywhere - please don't waste your time in New York there.

I'm with Ryan, if you have only four days in New York it wouldn't be my first choice to go up to Woodbury Common either -- but if you do go to Rockland County make reservations at a restaurant called Xaviar's in Piermont.
It is expensive, but much cheaper than similar-quality restaurants in the city, and it's very romantic.

Matt, I live in Nassau County (2 blocks from Queens), and our county could use all the sales tax money it can get. We need imported big spenders like your girlfriend...
Luckily, I have a sense of ethics.:D The Woodbury Common is rated 5 stars because only 2 people rated it, and they both gave it 5 stars. The reviews look like they were written by the merchants themselves. A large reason for Woodbury Common's great PR is that the very wealthy people in that area pay for the PR.
If I were to rate the Woodbury Common (compared to other outlets), I would give it 2 out of 5 stars. My review: "I went there to see the free Broadway benefit performance. After the show, I walked around the Common for an hour. I did price/comparison shopping. I didn't buy anything."

Perehaps you should consider Centry21 instead (downtown next door to the Millenium Hilton and opposite the WTC).... its going to be similar prices but then you don't have to travel so far.
I think with 4 days it would be a shame to lose time on a bus to and from shops when there are plenty in New York.
I belive Soho might also provide you with some trendy boutiques that will be cheaper than 5th Avenue....plus if going from the UK the pound is good against the dollar so you will get even more for your money.
Just remeber about sales tax...... I hated paying that damn sales tax

Woodbury Commons is a total waste of time. I have been there twice in the past 5 years, and did not buy anything. First of all, most of the clothing that is a good value there is truly outdated and bad. Also, there are huge lines in most stores for both cash registers and fitting rooms. Now that there's no more sales tax for clothing in New York City (for items costing less than $110), there's no better place to shop than New York.
There are great discount stores here (Century 21, Filene's Basement, Sims, Duffy's, etc.) and so many great chains and depatment stores where the prices on sale are often better than what you'd find in Woodbury Commons.

Locals hate Woodbury Commons because of traffic congestion and pollution.

Can anyone confirm if woodbury common is as good for shopping as it is advertised as being? Not all out of date fashions is it?

It is OK. This is the mall up north.
It's OK. Prices are decent, but like most "outlets" you will spend more on time and gas than you will save on prices.
It really is not worth the hassle unless you live 20 minutes from it anyway OR really like shopping and have been invited out.

Thanks for that, is there somewhere else you would recommend instead?

I live 20 minutes from it and it's still not worth the hassle.
MrsLG, approximately where do you live?

Yeah, they do have some good deals, and it's also humongous.. but i'm sure you know how people get excited about the idea of saving a few bills.

Americans were once known for free-spending generosity. We've since morphed into a nation of penny-pinching bargain hunters.

With the on-going sales in almost all stores in NYC is there really much to gain by traipsing out to a mall of retail outlets?

Precisely. When you get here you will see that every avenue is a lineup of stores. It's so different from other American cities, just walk around town and you'll find bargains. We don't need malls, we have sidewalks.

Some things in New York you can't get elsewhere at any price. I guess that would make them bargains at any price (you just need to have enough money to afford the bargains ;)).
